Maybe this has been asked and answered around here, but I couldnt' find much. I'm looking for recommendations for a red dot that will go on a 12.5" ar15 pistol upper. It will mainly be used for plinking from 25 to 100 yds max (most likely 50 yds max). It is not a major concern where I live, but obviously there is the home defense aspect to the build, that the sight will need to be suitable for. I would like to be around the $200 dollar mark or less. Thanks all for the help

I am looking at the Sig Romeo 5 myself. I am reading good things about them. They are around $250, though.
The Holosun and Hi-Lux may be worth a look in your price range.

I had considered the Sig Romeo 5 and the Holosun Paralow HS503G with the ACSS reticle. I just can't get a good read on the quality of the Holosun to determine if it would be a boat ancor or not. The budget is really $200'ish. I'm not in a big hurry now. I just finished purchasing the rest of the components for the pistol. I mainly want to zero in on something so I know what I'm looking for in case a sale or something pops up. If it takes $250 to get a sight I'll be happy with long term, then that's what I'll do. Thanks for the input.

As I said in the PM: weapon light, weapon light, weapon light! I am a big fan of red dots; however, in the context of home defense, the red dot comes after the light, yes, it is that important!
And I have one of the Romeos - the one that sell on a 320 carry gun - and don't like it as much as the Burris Fastfire option. The burris is one button and cycles, whereas the romeos are 2 button and sometimes don't like to do what I want them to - as in turn off. Lastly, the best in the game, for this use, is Aimpoint, in my opinion. I have tried most options out there and always return to the battery life and durability of the Aimpoint option. It is battle tested and you can leave it on for a year, then swap the batteries once a year before they get close to dying. There is a big difference in price, and that delta is well deserved.

Yes, always a light first for my use on a pistol.

I am using a Romeo 5 on my AR pistol w/a Steiner Tor ir pointer and a streamlight white light. The Romeo is a motion on/off. It ran me about $120 (was on sale) and I carry it in my trunk as my duty carbine.

I have the tor also, like it...okay. It is that or a PEQ15, which is much larger but runs off a tape switch.
The Tor was added recently, under NODs, should be a good option for a gun that lacks miles of rail space. I am accustomed to IR lasers that aren't the civilian variant, they bloom more up close but are hella useful at 100+ yards.

I lit up a water tower over 1000 yds with the Tor on high.... impressive. I'm planning to use the breach with PVS 14 and Dbal D2 on my 16". Can't hunt with a pistol, AR or otherwise in PA.

I finally completed the pistol build. I was able to find a WMD nickel boron BCG and purchased a Vortex Crossfire II for the red dot and Stream light rail mount protac 2. I needed to take the muzzle loader to the range and took the pistol with to have some fun. It all worked out well and was a blast to shoot. Nothing too fancy, just a paper target shot at 25yds to get a zero with Hornaday black fmj 62gn. Here are some pics: |

I haven't posted a pic for a while so I'm figuring this out again. I resized the other ones, it doesn't look like I needed to. One more time: |
