Good afternoon ladies and gents,

It has been a long time..probably a couple of years.  Ive moved and shoot a lot less, but need to get a few optics just cause.....  I am a value shopper....best bang for the buck is what I am looking for.  As I mentioned I don't shoot that much anymore, so no need to spend thousands for me.  Curious on any thoughts or inputs in items below and first hand experience.  I need one hunting rifle scope and two target rifle scopes....I just dont have Nightforce money to blow, and my personal experience with multiple Vortex products rules them out in the future for me.  Yes...they had good customer service, but they are the only ones I have had to use.

I just ordered a Nikon Black FX1000 4-16x50 illuminated to put on a new bravo company 18" upper so will see how that looks when it gets here.  For the price of 379 dont think I can go wrong.

A couple other I have been looking at...again based on perceived value are:

Bushnell Forge 2.5-15 FFP, marked down to 399....I dont love a MOA reticle to mix in but just kind of want to try one.  I watched a vid where the guy abused the hell out of the turrets and it went on to track perfect.  What little I can find is pretty good, but again MOA and I dont know how useable that reticle would be at all at the bottom end...non illuminated.  At just under 400 though I might be able to find a home, made in China though.

Leupold VX-3i LRP - can get the 4.5-14 in mil/mil at 599 right now.  Its a more useable range on the low end, no illumination.

Meopta Optika6 - These look interesting and priced pretty well.  I see some input from a member here as well on reticles.  Availability is sparse on some options, but right now leaning on a 4-27x50 or maybe the 5-30x56 when the right options are out.  From my past experience with Meopta I would put these above the other options on glass quality...but I am not sure if that is true any longer, or if the Bushnell/LRP have improved.

Any comparisons or feedback between the Nikon Black FX1000, Bushnell Forge, Leupold LRP, or Meopta Optika6 would be appreciated.  Right now I'm leaning toward waiting on the versions of Meopta I want...

Thanks!

Welcome fellow Iowan.
The Super Sniper 3-9x42 is one of my favorites.  Unfortunately it is out of stock right now but could be placed on back order.   Of the scopes you mentioned I tend to like the Leupold.  When you are talking about a hunting scope in Iowa that raises a few questions as far as what are you putting it on a Muzzleloader, a  slug gun or a rifle that fires a straight wall cartridge if so which rifle.
I put a Leupold 2.5x28 on a Marlin lever action and like it.
I'm also a big fan of the Redfield 2-7x33 and I find 2x to be very useful this scope also comes in a version with a balistic reticle.
My musket has a Nikon BDC 300 now discontinued but you may find one used with a little effort.
I see you leaning toward higher magnification optics and for a target gun you might find the ones you mentioned OK but you need to give it some thought because if you really want one high end optic sometimes you are better off to just save up for a while and have what you really want rather than just making do and eventually being less satisfied than you would be with what you truly want.  I'm sure you dont want to hear me say buy a nightforce and put it in La Rue LT719 quick detach rings and run it on both guns but you might be happier if you did.

I'd lean toward Optika6.

Given that Nikon is out of the riflescope business (and FX1000 had problems to start with), I would not touch one with a ten foot pole.

Leupold LRP is a decent scope, but I really like illumination with FFP designs and that very tall turret is odd.

Forge is the same scope as Athlon Ares and it is a very respectable design, but I am not a MOA guy.  If you can live with the reticle, it is  decent deal.

thanks for the input gents.

Lol bad timing to hear your thoughts on the FX1000...it arrived yesterday but haven’t opened it yet.

I think I’ll wait on the right Optikas to become available then and maybe get one to try....then if good another.

Thanks!

Acquaintance has a new in box Burris XTRII for 700 bucks...5-25 model.  Not sure I can beat that deal....other option if I spend that much was Steiner px4i 4-16.

That Burris is a good scope.  I've always intended to get one and just never have.  Got to use one on several occasions at Yuma.  I really liked it.

Well, came across an auction on Gunbroker from a good seller...picked up a 4.5-14 LRP with the CCH reticle for 530 bucks....couldnt pass on it.  The TMR reticle one can be found for 600 plus tax and ship, but not with this reticle.

One more to go...havent pulled the trigger on the Burris yet....its been out for 5 or so years, figure during that time advancements and such....

I wasn’t impressed by the Burris. I much prefer my SWFA 5-20 over the Burris in every way.
Someone suggested the SWFA 3-9, and I echo that advice. I have one on a lightweight hunting rifle and really like. Would prefer 10 mil revolutions, but it’s still a great scope. Great eye relief.
I’m a fan of the SWFA HD line for sure.

I like the SS 5-20 as well... nice scope, but if I can get a new in the box Burris XTRII 5-25 for $700.00 (a $400-$600 differential in price), I'm going with the Burris.  If I decided I did not like it well enough to keep it, I could probably sell it for more than I had in it and buy the SS, reducing my overall cost.  Each has its significant positives... they are both really good scopes.

A large NY sport optics dealer has Bushnell Elite LRTS scopes for under $700.   One of the toughest and most reliable scopes made that will run  circles around any Burris offering.

Your "luck" with Burris does not include the entire world.  Your statement applies to you, great.  NOT true for the world.

Not to get too far off topic, but, why doesn’t SWFA have the Optika 6 lineup on theirs website? Thinking about replacing the Vortex Viper on my 6.5X47 with possibly a FFP 5-30X56. Any recommendation on reticles? It’s just a range toy. Too heavy to hunt with.
