I recently purchased my first reflex red dot – a Shield RMSc for my thin sub compact. I chose the new glass option because of reviews I have seen about scratches on the polymer lens. So far, with just two shooting sessions, I am liking it.
The issue: I did not realize the glass would be so close to the front of the aluminum housing.See pic below. There is minimal distance between the aluminum housing and the front of the glass. I CCW daily and am wondering if I made a mistake getting the glass lens, because it seems like just a matter of time before the glass rubs against my belt or some other object. I believe the polymer lens sits farther back and better protected under the housing. I can still send this sight back and have the polymer lens put in. Maybe I am overthinking it, but any opinion out there on which is better – a polymer lens that sits farther back and is more protected by the aluminum frame, or this glass lens that is more exposed? |

Can you change holster to one that covers / protects the red dot?

I have several RMS sites, but they are the older version - and I like them a lot.
On the glass, I would say leave it, if it does become a problem, send it back then - or is there a time constraint on sending it home for a lens swap? Most red dots on a handgun will pick up debris, especially if worn daily. I wasn't aware the glass was available yet, but yea, this might slow my trying it out. As for a holster that covers it, not really; it's hard enough finding holsters with a cutout for a red dot, much less offering a measure of protection for it. |

Yeah, I guess that is the best idea... just use it as is. Perhaps I am overthinking it and it will not be a problem. Am I right though, that the polymer lens of the RMSc sits farther back from the front frame of the housing?
