I have a Diana 460 Magnum springer in 22. Want to put a scope on it, but am confused over what will survive and what will not.

Hawke say don't put one of their lower line scopes on an airgun that is over 12 foot pounds (this one is over 20).

I don't like the reticles in the Hawke Airmax scopes. Most all other airgun scopes look like cheap junk.

So, the question is, what centerfire rifle scopes will survive use on this airgun ?

Most sources say that a glass etched reticle survives much better, but manufacturer specifications rarely, if ever, specify what the reticle construction is.

Any ideas -anyone using a centerfire scope on a similar air rifle ?

thanks

I have an .22 RWS 350 Mag and a .22 Webley Scott Patriot. Both have high recoil with the Patriot being heavier.
I have a 6-24 x 50 Vortex Cossfire on the RWS. I don't believe it is air gun rated. But, it can adjust down to 10 yds and has hundreds of rounds through the gun with no ill effects...so far.
My Patriot has had a 6x42 Leupold Tactical on it for twenty years and it is not airgun rated. I called Leupold some time back and the told me all of their scopes are air gun rated. That scope keeps on ticking.
The biggest problem I have found is mounting scopes on these guns. I put a BKL 260 6 screw on the RWS a few years back and it has not moved.
I just ordered another BKL 260 for the Patriot. I also ordered a 2.5-10x32 SS Ultralight for it. It is not springer rated but I will certainly find out.
Regarding the scope, it is parallax adjusted for 50 yards, the glass is quite nice and it is extremely light. I will be posting a report by next week.

Thanks Doug

I too wish that airgun manufacturers would put pic / weaver rails on the guns instead of the useless dovetail bases.

I was thinking that Leupold or Vortex would be a good bet because if they fail they repair or replace them for free. I may run with Crossfire II 3-9x40 and see how it goes. Weight is not such a big deal for me, these air rifles weigh more than 22 rimfires, so a few ounces here and there will not be noticed.

AMEN!!! Couldn’t agree more!!!

I have an SWFA SS 3-15x42 on a Weihrauch HW97 springer, and it has been an excellent scope for that use, especially since it parallax adjusts down to only 6m. I have it on 2 air rifles, and I think that scope is a near perfect all-around air rifle scope. Granted, the HW97 is a very soft-shooting springer, so most decent scopes would probably work fine on it. However, the SS scopes are extremely robust and will handle magnum springers no problem...at least the tactical SS scopes will; not sure about the 2.5-10 Ultralight.

I have an unmounted SS 6x42 that I could use - I'd just prefer something with shorter turrets with caps so that I could set and forget.

I recently asked Leupold that very question - their reply :-

"Hey John,

Thanks for reaching back out, I'm happy to help! To answer your question, ALL Leupold scopes will withstand the recoil of airguns. When shopping Leupold, the biggest challenge will be getting a scope that will focus close enough, which is why we would typically recommend one of our EFR models, most of which can focus as close as 10 yards. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Regards,

Chris  "

I have abused the EFR  scope  seriously!!!! before mounting on my pellet rifle. The adjustments are mushy but precise.  Wonderful scope.
