I finally decided on a Swaro Z5 3.5-18x44 BT for my Cooper model 52 in 25-06.  (Thanks to ILya and others who provided input.) I don't want to use the Leupold bases with the windage adjustment and am looking for input on which mounts and rings to use.  I am not interested in QD mounts.

At the moment, I'm wavering between:
  • Warne (their site pointed me towards high), and I already have the two piece Maxima bases
  • Talley LW's (their site points to medium)
Even though I already have the Warne bases, I'm not wed to using the corresponding rings and would buy rings and a different set of bases.  I know the Talley vs. Warne debate has been raised elsewhere, so I don't want any fights.  I'm also looking for other suggestions, including aesthetics.  Conetrol?  (A bit of internet research is a dangerous thing for a novice!)

I vote for the Talley light weights.  I have quite a few pairs of Warne and Talley's.  Overall, I like the Talley LW's better.  They are a great setup.

The Warne's are all steel and I have seen a touch of surface rust on them from time to time when hunting in the wet.  They have also left rust stains on my scope tubes are well.

No fights...  I don't recall any debates here between the two in a very very long time.

As ST said, the lightweight one piece are a great choice. The Talley fixed rings that resemble Warne are a good choice too, I like the smooth lines of the Talley better. For me the choice would be which Talley rings to get lightweight or fixed for my next rifle... Big Grin

mike650, can you please tell me more about your choice between the LW and fixed?

Anyone have thoughts on medium vs. high for my setup?  I was wrong - the Warne site suggests high for the 44mm objective lens, but the Talley site leaves it up to me to choose.

I have low Talley on several scopes with 42mm objectives.  Part of it will depend upon your barrel thickness.

I just put a zeiss 1.5-6x42 in a set of extra low lightweights on a rem m7 with room to spare.  Thinking you would not have any problems with lows.

Several years ago I had that model 52 Cooper you have. Great shooter. As I recall, I used the Talley rings. Pretty sure I had mediums.

I usually pick the lightweight one piece for my hunting needs here on the west side, spot n stalk. My grandfather’s ‘ol 30.06 with wooden stock I went fixed, gives it a classic look. I also went fixed on my 7mm mag, I wanted silver and the color of the fixed was better match to the stainless rifle hardware.

Size... well I’ve mounted a z6 50mm obj on my remy with Talley lows. The bolt cleared the eye piece but was super tight, forget it if you were wearing gloves. With that said, you should be able to use lows or mediums with 42mm or 44mm depending on barrel... and scope. Most Swarovski and Leica have larger eye piece that can effect your bolt clearance, I’ll usually go medium even though lows will work, probably more of a personal preference at that point.

Check out the Ken Farrell rings.  I put them on my Cooper rifles.  A bit pricey but they’re very nice rings and a great match on a Cooper.

Thanks for all of the input. I decided on Talley Premium Steel with low bases and they seem perfect.

Follow-up question. Swaro says not to go over 18 in/lbs regardless of what the ring manufacturer says. The Talley instructions say to tighten the top of the rings at 20# and the bottom at 30#. Stupid question - do I do 18# for both, or should I do 30# on the bottom because there isn't any pressure put on the tube and it is securing the rings to the base?

You can tighten the bottom screws to 30 because as you stated, they apply pressure to the bases only. The inner screws beneath the base clamp plate are the ones applying pressure to the scope tube. I’ve not heard the 18 in/lb limit requirement on Swarovski scopes before, but that doesn’t sound unreasonable. Typically you have sufficient torque on scope rings with around 15 in/lbs. I usually don’t even measure torque anyway. I’ve installed so many scopes that I rely on my “calibrated fingers,” using the short end of the Allen/Torx key for tightening, and I’m usually in the 15-20 in/lb ballpark.

Thanks RifleDude. I just want to make sure I understand.  The Talley rings have a screw at the base and one at the top.  When you say the "inner screws beneath the base clamp plate are the ones applying pressure to the scope tube" are you referring to the screw that is at the bottom (6 o'clock) position? If so, then it seems that I wouldn't tighten either screw to 30#, as that's the "bottom" screw to which I was referring.  (I'm ignoring the base plate screws - I tightened those to 28#.)

coyote95 - yes, the Z5 and the low bases worked out perfectly, and the Swaro was awesome last night at the very end of legal shooting light. The setup also looks awesome with the Cooper - very similar to yours. Great rig!
