Hello to my longtime optic friends...I recognize quite a few usernames still here, and I'm back from a long break.   Anyways to the original poster - How about a 1" tubed Schmidt & Bender Summit 2.5-10x40 ?? I remember when it came out quite some time now it was really rated well...now I don't have one or own one but for me I still prefer 1" tubed scopes which seem to be fading away. I recently tried a Leupold VX5HD 2-10x42mm. Great scope but too big for my tastes on the mountain rifle I use. Anyways neither of these choices have illumination but the Leupold does offer it in their VX5HD lineup. On another site it is incredible how much Leupold gets bashed but I've always had good luck with them although I don't dial, pretty much I set and forget and verify each year. Good luck, maybe just me but I always wanted to try a S&B Summit. I owned a S&B Fixed 4x36 with the #7 reticle which is like a #4 for most brands...anyways I foolishly traded it in here for a Zeiss Conquest I believe. I went back to a like new, never mounted VX3, not the VX3i, 2.5-8x36 for my 700 mountain rifle and am very please fwiw. I prefer the older VX3 so it worked out well for me.

I totally forgot about the Summit.  I thought S&B discontinued it a couple of years, but I see they still show it on their website.  I guess it is still in production.  I recall really liking the version with the 4A reticle.

Koshkin good too see your still doing your thing here and elsewhere....anyways what are your thoughts on a VX3 2.5-8 vs.  VX3i 2.5-8??Not to hijack but I cant think of another $400 scope that does what these two do and in my humble opinion would fit on the OP posters BLR very nicely....just saying

VX-3 and VX-3i are the same scope with different cosmetics.

2.5-8x36 is easily my favourite out of this line-up.

As far as the BLR goes, it will do well on it.  I am planning to purchase a BLR myself and I already acquired a scope for it: recently discontinued Vortex Razor HD LH 1.5-8x32 which, frankly, walks all over the VX-3 and you could get it for under $400 for several months.  Not sure if there are still any to be had.

Aside from that, 2.5-8x36 is a good scope in its price range.

Thanks for your insight Kosh kin and yes I suspected this was the case about the V3 and VX3.  I prefer the VX3 myself....and yes I would imagine the Vortex is better but for no particular I am not a fan of Vortex.  Back to the S&B Summit, looks like they go for about $2000....if you can get one.  Mighty steep..

Hadnt visited in several days so need to give an update. Thanks to all the suggestions. Keep in mind that in my original post that this scope and gun is for a friend of mine. Not my own. I did buy him the leica visus 2.5 x10x42. I mounted it for him using talley light weights std(which I think are considered low mounts) which left more than expected and more than i like for clearance between scope bell and barrel but worked out because it gave more room for working the hammer. I will try to post some pics of gun and 100 yd group. Gun is a tack driver considering it's a hammer gun and trigger less than desirable. Also short barrel. I'm guessing 18 inches. Maybe 20

S&B Stratos 1.5-8X42 FFP FD7. I have this on a Sako 85 Bavarian Carbine in .308, relatively compact, great range for a hunting optic, clear with very good light gathering. We are allowed 1hr before sunrise and 1hr after sunset. Let’s just say a certain buck never saw his last hour before sunrise but only by 5-10 minutes last year.

You don't need to be an optical physicist to have an above-average understanding of how hunting optics and scopes work and how to use that knowledge to make a good purchase. That said, scopes are incredibly complex devices that rely on a myriad of moving parts and principles to function properly.

Did you accomplish with that post what you were hoping to accomplish with it?

Just curious.
Freedom is something you take.
Respect is something you earn.
Equality is something you whine about not being given.

I came late to this party... but just wanted to say one thing.  I have a Kahles 50mm with a plain ole plex reticle and I also hunt from 30 mins before to 30 mins after and I have never needed a lit reticle since I started hunting with it.  I can see past 30 mins even... both the target and the reticle.  I was 54 yrs old last season.   FWTW

I will second this:
I have 2 Vortex Razor HD LH's in 1.5-8x32. 4 total from this lineup. I really like this optic. I was initially skeptical of the G4 ret. It sights extremely fast when shouldering and just fits well. Perfect for deer hunting carbines. Too bad the lower mag range ones are being discontinued. It is relatively large; @ 11". The weight is decent @ 13.4oz. The price varies in its current state of non-production....as stated.
I want another one for a CZ mannlicher in 6.5x55.

I had emailed Vortex on the status of this optic, I received the expected political response but was surprised to read that it wasn't a very good seller. I also have the VX3i 2.5-8x36 and wished the money went to hording another Razor HD LH 1.5-8x32.
