Well, as Peddler says being heavy is no big deal!! Roll Eyes I need one for a 22 and the rifle only weighs 5 1/2 pounds....but I don't want to use that Nikon that I have because the Nikon is like 12 inches long!  Say What

Eduardo, my old Monarch UCC 4X40 is not 12’ long!!!

It’s 11 1/2” longπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ’₯.
When you are dead, you don't know you are dead.It is difficult only for others.

It is the same when you are stupid.

3x is fine on the bottom end for non-dangerous game.  I'm pretty sure I can't see 2000 yds! Sad
take em!

Yes it does but not enough to end your chance at the hit. I don't worry about the earth curving, it's doing it all the time :)

@tip69
A 3x scope on a target closer than 80 yards is still a bit problematic. I suspect a bull elk will take up just about all your F.O.V. where a 2.5x still shows the context to place the shot. Anyone else have an opinion on this? I ask because I've been thinking about the ultimate variable scope magnification. There are 2.5-15x in the market which I like alot but if the goal was one scope to rule them all, it would fall short on the upper range due to clarity. I asked about the potential for a fixed 8X for a cheap, ultimate special purpose scope (long range). The problems with high magnification have always been stability and clarity. A fixed 8x with perfect clarity will be less fidgety than a good fixed 10x (US Optics ST-10) and perhaps still be good enough to see 2000 meters. I'm thinking extra clarity and greater stabilty could trump the extra 2x of magnification at that distance. Does that discussion deserve its own thread?

That would be one hell of an elk.

A decent scope will subtend around 33-38 feet at 100 yards on 3x.

A good size bull elk is probably around 8 feet long from nose to tail.

It will fill the FOV of a reasonable 3x scope at 20-25 yards.

A fixed 8x50 or 8x56 scope has been a mainstay of low light hunters in Europe for a fair numer of years, although that has really switched over to 3-12x56 scopes.

Given the improvements in scopes and economies of scale, the only real reason to buy a fixed power scope these days is for nostalgic reasons.

There are a few exceptions to that (if you want a $300 scope that racks well, SWFA's fixed power is your best bet), but generally there is really no reason to not go with a variable.  There may be some difference for the ultra hard kicking rifles, but that is somewhat outside my field of expertise.

I have hunted for elk for many years with 3-9x scopes.  I have never felt under or over scoped with those mags.  I have shot elk within 50 yards and one at over 400 yards.

For me personally for big game hunting a scope 2-3 on the bottom end and 9-12 on the top end is all you will ever need for deer and elk.  I also prefer the 40ish size objective to keep the scope low, more compact, and light.  A quality 42mm scope will be bright enough for all legal big game hunting times for Utah hunting.  Just my opinions.

No.  That is simply not correct.

I am not sure what lithography equipment has to do with this, other than making reticles.

Agreed, 3-9x is adequate for that distance but new .308 projectiles have made 1500 meter kills realistic if you can sight/range it.

Soap Box of my opinion of long range hunting.

99.99% of hunters will never have the skill to make those types of shots regardless if a bullet will do it.  And there are way to many that think those shots are easy and have no respect for the game that they are wounding when doing it.  They buy the latest super dooper magnum and a 30x scope and think they are bob lee swagger and can shoot a deer a 1000 yards with no practical training.  Most of the time they will miss, by a long ways.  But they do wound those animals and by the time they walk that far to get to them who knows where the animal may be.

Many shooters don't understand enough about ballistics to be taking shots beyond the MPBR of their round.  And then there are a lot of shooters who don't have a clue what their MPBR even is.

I have shot a 6.5 creed, a .308, a 300 WM, a .338 lapua all at 1500 yards.  Its a very very tough shot.  The only times I made hits is when I had two ex marine snipers calling the wind for me and even then I missed most of the time.

Off my soap box

This is a thread about 4X scopes. This discussion needs to go elsewhere.
