How good is this scope?
Looking to put it on an 18" 6.5 Grendel. Scope I am looking at is the Viper PST 6-24X50. The first generation. Price I got is $500. Out of these, which will be better? Vortex Viper PST 6-24X50 - $500 Vortex Diamondback Tactical 6-24X50 - $350 Athlon Argos BTR 6-24X50 - $300 Let me know. This is for mainly range use at about 300-500, but looking to find a place to get to at least 800 one day. Maybe a hunting trip one day, but that would be 150-200 yards max.

It's a fair scope. I had one briefly and it was entirely too much magnification for anything I was planing to use it on.
I ultimately ended up trading it on on a 4-16X50 PST which worked out much better for me. Objectively what would the goal for your rifle? If you are thinking medium to long range tactical, I think it would be okay for you, but not optimum. For hunting, I think that you would be over powered and that it would be difficult to keep a bead on anything on the run as a result do to the narrow field of view.
If I were you, I would feel more comfortable with a rock solid 3-9X at the distances you are talking about shooting. |

I agree with Skylar that lower power would be a better choice for the majority of your shooting. Is you budget $500? If you can give us the max budget we can make some recommendations for you based on that.

the range I shoot on is only 600 yds. How much magnification do I need. The 4x16 or the 6x24? How far will the 4x16 shoot for precision. I am just getting started in this sport.

I had 2 of them and had major issues with both. IMO they are JUNK. However the Gen 2 are a much better scope.
