Have a decent tripod now with a pistol grip which drives me crazy when panning to find targets or animals.  Wouldn’t mind spending up to $300.

What kind of tripod is it?  3/8 screw? or bowl on top?

Bummer, I hear good things about the pistol grips. Personally I use a fluid head, smooth and precise. Check out Manfrotto.

To add... that looks like a large spotter, what type of tripod are you using. A cheap light weight model isn’t always the most stable depending on what you’re doing.

Nice panning heads are not cheap.

This is a little over your budget, but a good deal:

Of the less expensive ones, FVH-450 from Field Optics Research is not bad at all.

The Swarovski DH 101 ILya linked to is what I have. Manfrotto makes one like it, they might make Swaro’s. 😉
