I am not sure how the ACOG is a direct competitor to the Aimpoint.
There is no 1x ACOG that I am aware of. Aimpoints are very good red dot sights, but the competition has largely caught up, so I am not sure it is worthwhile to pay Aimpoint prices. However, if that rocks your boat, I do not see why not. As I have mentioned a few times before, with non magnifying sights my current choice is Vortex UH-1 if I want to run it with a magnifier, Shield SIS for carbine use and Shield RMS for mounting on a slide of a semi-auto handgun. That does not mean the other sights are not good, it simply means that the combination of features of these sights appeals to me. I also own Doctersight3, Burris Fastfire II, HiLux MM2 and a few other random sights that are all working reasonably well. Battery life these days is essentially a moot point. I habitually swap batteries out once per year and just about all of them these days last more than a year of typical use. ILya

Ilya while the compact ACOG is a 1.5x I really do like it for the type of use one would have for a red dot type sight. The only fault I find with the amber triangle 1.5x is that the amber color washes out some when pointed toward street lights at night. Still the glass on the ACOG is clear where the coatings on the dot do seem to me to be less desirable in low light. For me not having to turn it on is also a factor. I have a hard time just leaving one running if it has an off switch particularly if the battery is not easy to find. I have to admit I am a bit concerned about battery leaking damage also. Also quite fond of my 1-4 Accupoint. I do really like the Comp M4 and Comp M4s and I have some 9000L Aimpoints that I use a lot. You are really fortunate to get the opportunity to review so many high quality optics. I always enjoy your reviews and the photos. Thank You Ilya.

The difference you see in low light is a consequence of the magnification. It has nothing to do with the coatings. Magnification is multiplicative: difference between 1x and 1.5x is equivalent to the difference between 6x and 9x or between 10x and 15x. 1x vs 1.5x may not sound like much, but it is. ILya |

I have the astigmatism issue.
That said, The am selling my red dot. The holographics work ok. The Trijicon reflex RX 01 with tritium dot works, but washes out. Also, I am trying not to buy Chicom stuff. I did order a Chinese made prism type 1x optic to see how that works. They have etched reticle and can be illuminated or not. |

I agree completely with the Aimpoint comments. Though highly reliable, they are no longer the "king of the hill" in red dot performance. However, I'm still drawn to Aimpoint.

There is nothing wrong with Aimpoint and like with many product categories these days, competition is so competent that a bunch of makers fundamentally make very good products and the choice between them largely comes down to personal preference and familiarity. I developed fairly specific preferences based on a a whole bunch of the non-focusing (i.e. reflex and holgoraphic) sights I have messed with in the last 2-3 years: -For carbines I really like Shield SIS and it works exceedingly well for me -If I want to run a magnifier in a flip mount, I go for the Vortex UH-1 holographic sight -Shield RMS family is my go to option for handguns That having been said, my shooting would not change for better or worse in any sort of meaningful way if I were to swap SIS for the Aimpoint Micor, UH-1 for the EOTech and RMS for the Doctersight, just to offer some examples. Years ago I went down the optics snob path. Eventually I realized that the SWFA SS line was more than I'll ever need.
A year ago I got my 1st AK. Thinking it less of a gun I appointed with an appropriate optic. Robski recommends the Primary Arms 3x prism. I figured it par for the course for AK. Why throw a 1k 1-6x SS on the AK? Boy was I wrong. That optic is perfect for AK. Tula extrapolates perfectly with the reticle. Features and build quality are awesome. So now I am looking at the Holosun Military for an A4 rifle build. I was so out of touch with this type of optic I had no clue this stuff was so good. All I ever used was Eotech. I guess I didn't realize I was back on that optics snob path. I wonder why SWFA doesn't carry Primary Arms? |
