Hello--
I am currently looking around for an optic to put on top of my LWRC that I use on duty, and for the occasional matchhere locally. I would like to stay in the $700 and below range, and am REALLY liking the Burris XTR II 1-5--it seems to have everything I want, a good reticle, illumination (NV mode!), and capped turrets. I'm willing to take a hit on SFP, so that's not a show-stopper. I'm normally a huge fan of Vortex, but I'm not really a fan of the PST gen II reticle. Is there any other options that fall within this range that I'm missing? For me, durability is probably the biggest factor--which is why I'm hesitant on the Burris (I just don't know much about them)...Any advice would be appreciated from folks who run their stuff pretty hard--I'm not very gentle on gear...

For duty use I tend to prefer Trijicon products because the tritium illumination is always turned on. Sometimes there are some on samplelist that are lightly used. I have two compact ACOG scopes one is a 1.5x amber triangle the amber washes out when pointed toward street lights at night. One is a 3x rec cross hair I also have an Accupoint 1-4 red post they make a 1-6 also. The small size and light weight of the Compact ACOG's mounted in a La Rue RCO mount make a fine choice for tactical LE use. I am very fond of the fixed 3x Compact ACOG however they do make a 2x version also a fine choice in red or green. Not wild about the amber color for LE. I too am a fan of the ACOG, it is a time-tested, battle-tested optic. I've run most of Trijicon's optics and like most of them. I also agree they are great for duty use (as said above) because they are instantly usable for 10+ years without batteries to change (or die at a bad time) but also would suggest you spend the money to buy new. A used Trijicon means some of that 10 years is already spent. My preference is a good red dot, usually Aimpoint, and with that I am good for most conditions point blank (with a fair bit of offset training) to about 300 yards. I assume for matches you need a bit more precision, and thus the want for a variable. I have a few guns with magnifying optic and an offset red dot and that is about perfect for point blank to 500+ yards, but might be budget busting for you. Along that line, I have had much success with Burris fastfire red dots, and they are not prohibitively expensive. If you can find a magnifying optic with a fastfire attached (I saw some a few years ago), that too would be worth a look. In the end, you have to decide if the priority is match or duty. There is some overlap in utility and choices, but with your budget, something will have to suffer a bit to make room for the other. Were it me setting up a duty gun: red dot with backup irons or ACOG, done. |

Have you looked into the U.S. Optics SVS-6? This is a new scope that was released earlier this year. I love mine. It has proven to be very rugged and durable. The glass is crystal clear and it comes with a daylight visible red dot. It is a little out of your price range, but they do back it up with a lifetime warranty I have nothing but top notch customer support. Definitely worth taking a look at!
