Looking at a few optics to match up to a Sako Bavarian Carbine in .308win that I bought. I'm trying to balance something compact, relatively light with excellent low light capabilities and that will be right for the gun. This isn't going to be a range toy or safe queen, I intend to use it and kill deer and pigs by the truckload. I hunt in the Carolina bays, swamps and pine forests of coastal SC. We see a lot of deer at the edge of dawn and dusk. I'm thinking 42mm objective would be the largest that I want with 10-12x being as high a power as I want So far this is my list: Trijicon 2.5-12X42 Accupoint Leica Visus 2.5-10X42 Il 4A Leupold VX5 HD 2-10X42 FD Duplex Leupold VX6 HD 2-12X42 FD Bullet Drop/Duplex S&B Stratos 1-8X42 Flashdot I'm open to other suggestions as well. |

I’m real happy with my ERi 2.5-10 X 42 #4. |

For that kinda hunting, I prefer a true 1X, or as close as I can get to it. I'd put that S&B close to the top of the list.

Here's my Sako Bavarian with a Leica ERi 2.5-10×42. My ERi has the exposed elevation turret which isn't available on the Visus, but otherwise they have the exact same dimensions, and I believe, the exact same optics. It's a very nice scope, I have two of them and love the vividness and contrast, would still be my first choice for this rifle. |

I seriously considered a Leupold VX-5hd 2-10 as well, mainly because I wanted an exposed elevation turret and it's a very nice one on the VX-5 and VX-6 scopes.
The overall quality of the Leica is just a bit nicer, fit and finish, the windage cap doesn't have a cheesy rubber gasket that bulges when you tighten it down, etc. |

If I purchased another ERi I’d put it on my Model 7 MS .257 Roberts. |

I flipped a coin and went with the S&B. Found it on a clearance where the prices were virtually the same and I have a Stratos on a 85 FinnBear in 7mmRM that’s almost unfair in low light.
The Trijicon was too big and just doesn’t seem to fit the rifle. I also spoke with someone at my LGS who had been having issues with the CDS on his VX6. Rather go with the known and it was best 3 out of 5 on the coin flip. |

What sort of problem were they having with the VX6 CDS? It's just an etched cap.

He'd sent his back to Leupold 2X because it wouldn't return to zero was the claim. Doesn't really matter to me, I was always leaning to the S&B and Leica for this rifle.
