Hi guys I'm considering to buy a used Swarovski 1,7-10x42 with the CD-I reticle as a generel purpose scope for my 308. I spend lots of time hunting in bad light, such as late evenings and winter night time. My other scopes, Zeiss V HT and Diavari are good big x56 and function well, but they are already dedicated to other rifles.
So, the CD-I has an illuminated dot and circle and that concerns me. From my experience with Zeiss, which has excellent illumination, i've learned that no matter how fine illumination, it still tends to drown out the dark matter you're aiming at, and with a "big" illuminated circle I'm afraid a little fox will be all drowned out at 60 meters by that very circle.
Have you guys tried it, what do you say? |

Personally I really like Swarovski's Z4i. the 2.5-10x56 is a great scope for low light and the dot goes very small.

I have that exact scope with that exact reticle. There is no issue with the illumination drowning out the target when hunting in low light and dark in my experience. The illumination control can get very dim to the point it is almost non-existent, if you so desire. It has a broad intensity range. Plus, to my eye, there's something about the orange-amber color that doesn't have the same overpowering intensity as with other colors, but someone else may disagree. I think that's due to the fact the color is so different from anything naturally found in nature that it doesn't require very much illumination intensity to see, or it could just be the way my eye works where I notice that orange color more readily at a lower setting.
