I sold my Aimpoint Pro. The reason for that is that I found out I do need magnification. Hate to admit it but the eyes are not what they used to be. I have been looking around and have stumbelt over Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8x24. Is there anybody in here that knows about this scope? I know the quality of Vortex, have / have had, several of their products and always been very happy with it, but this one I don't know anything about. Anybody?? |

I don’t mind the design, but im thinking about how good light etc. do you get on 8 mag. when you only have 30mm ? Tunnel vision?
I am thinking og spending around 400$ . |

30 mm is actually the larger tube diameter of the two most common US scopes. (1 inch being the most commom = 25.4mm) Larger tube = more light transmission possible.
I just bought a strike eagle for an AR 10 project I'm working on in 358 Winchester. It will be for swamp hunting whitetails and feral hogs. Eye relief is not very forgiving at upper end of magnification. (you have a narrow window of min/max distance from scope that gives you a clear sight picture through scope) Only downside of scope I have noticed and it is not going to be a problem for my application though generally I like higher magnification scopes for stand hunting, this will be stalk hunting and close range mostly. Light transmission and color are good. Still waiting on my upper receiver so have not fired on a rifle yet. (happy with other Vortex optics I own) Illuminated reticle looks good and I think I'm going to be satisfied with it for my purposes. First impression on reticle was it is very similar to the one on Burris 332 and 536 AR scopes. SWFA sale with the SSALT mount and two magpul mags is a great deal. Mount is very similar to Burris PEPR or WARNE one piece mounts I own several of each and design I prefer on AR's.

A couple of points:
-tube diameter has nothing to do with light transmission -358WInchester is an itneresting caliber for AR-10. That having been said, Strike Eagle would not at the top of my list for a hog hunting scope. Honestly, it wouldn't be on my list for anything low light related. ILya

I can understand why people would like .358W and .338Fed for hog hunting. Seems in an AR-10 would be a good pig-poker to me! Flat top AR-10. Low mag scope for stalking, NV set up for pigs under a feeder or an 8x56 if laws mean you need moodlight... Boom! Ilya, I think carbine 100 means that for straight body scopes, the tube diameter dictates lense diameter. Claus, if I were you I'd be looking at something like a1-6x42 or if you could find it a Kahles 1.6-8x42. Scrummy |

First of all. Welcome to the forum, it's always nice to hear from new members. 😊 Thank's for the review of the Strike Eagle. I like the thought of 8 x ill. mag. on a scope like this. But I am also fully aware of the eye relief by 8 times mag. can't be big. Vortex though, has allways done what I have expected of the binos and scopes I have had, thats why this caught my interesse, at a price that is worth mentioning. I guess I have to go to a dealer and spend some time checking it out and see what I think. |

I am about to finish a AR10 in 338 fed. I have been test firing it and will soon put a scope on it. I would be interested to here any of you guys thoughts as well. I doubt I would shoot over 300 meters with it. My eyes are getting a bit old and I certainly don't want to miss something in the back ground and hit something I don't want to. p230

I think you are right there, Mike, when it comes to light transmission through a straight body scope. Now this is not a need to have, but a nice to have as I am not much of a drivenhuntman. I tried it several times, but I have to admit more into spot and stalk, or hunting from a highseat. I could see this type of scope come in handy if you hunt in woods where you shoot at closer range. On the trip I had to Germany in May it could have been nice to have because the hunts were in the woods on distances where my eyes said" it's close but we would like a little magnification". I hope I can be one of the lucky ones that get a chance to go there next year as there is not many "seats"
