Just received the Shield RMS 4 MOA mini red dot sight. Incredibly low profile, nice design, dot is perfect, I love the idea of not having to uninstall the optic from the gun when replacing the battery. I like everything about it except for one thing...the battery tray on mine simply WILL NOT open! The video I saw online depicted the tray opening easily when you insert the Allen key into the starboard side hole and press. I try to duplicate with the 2.5mm Allen key, and mine will not budge even under considerable pressure. I’m afraid if I press any harder I might damage the sight.
Apart from inserting the Allen key and pressing, is there some other trick/secret technique I’m missing? |

None that I am aware of. It does require some pressure. There are two Allen keys that came with it. The larger of the two is the one for the battery tray, which is what I think you are using.
Otherwise, try the largest cross-section allen key that can fit. ILya

Ok, I finally got the battery tray to open. I removed it from the gun and took a look underneath to investigate the source of the problem. The latch that holds the tray closed would not depress far enough to disengage from the corresponding notch it snaps into. I pried the latch with a small screwdriver until I managed to work the tray loose. Upon inspecting the latch, the issue was a minor flaw in the plastic molding. It had a "blob" of extra plastic protruding from the end that caused interference, preventing it from unlocking. I cut the obstruction off, filed the surface smooth, and squared up the end of the latch. It now functions properly.

Mine has never popped out properly, probably for the same reason. As mine is in the "do I like it, do I trust it, do I want to keep it long term" phase, I trusted that the popping out tray could be addressed at the first battery change. Good to know you analyzed the problem and I now have something of a blueprint to at least reference when I begin the trouble-shooting. As much as I like the optic in form and function, it does suck that filing and adjusting is required for a big selling point to function properly. How did QC not notice this more-than-noticeable issue. (Rhetorical question.)
