The Maven B2 is the best $2,000 binocular you can buy for $1,000. As to longevity who knows? Who knows if the price of the alpha glass will cause sales drop to continue there? I am not prediction either gloom or success, just who knows who will last? Maven sells seriously good binoculars. |

Lecia Ultravid HD Plus 10x50? It looks like this can be had for quite a bit less than the Swaro EL

I owned a leica rf bino. Optics were amazing. They really had a 3d pop to my eyes, beautiful image

It appears you are really trying to over think this. You have yet to ask about a bad binocular. The plain truth here is that the optical differences in them are minimal and may well be less than the threshold that human eyes can detect. It seems to me that people tend to think that the differences that exist are greater than what does occur. Differences that exist are mainly in how well the binocular fits your face and hands and how enamored you might be in having the security blanket of a big name. Fit is the big deal. Brand name satisfaction is a worthy consideration...if you have the discretionary income.

I agree Steve, I have Zeiss 7x42, my brother Swarovski 7x42 and my brother in law Leica 7x42. The differences are very subtle.

I owned one of their range finders and was blown away by the optics but didn't like the actual ranging on it so I returned it.

That is why I sold mine as well button on wrong side and didn't range well past 1100 yards. I bought a Zeiss RF bino and like the ranging aspect much better. Optics are fantastic as well. Then Leica made the newer model. Now I want one of those.

Going to bring this back to life. Finally at the point I'm ready to pull the trigger but my thinking has changed slightly. I'm going to make this purchase my main binocular and will let my son use my Euro HD when he sits in the blind with me and eventually starts hunting on his own. I'm leaning toward the 8x42 slc. Ive noticed in the store that I do seem to struggle in certain positions holding a 10x really steady. I've looked at all the $1000'ish binos as well as the SLC. The slc is clearly better even in the perfect conditions inside the big box store. I'm assuming that will be magnified in real hunting conditions. Problem is the store only has the 10x42 slc. Only model I've looked through in 8x42 is the conquest hd. Wondering if anyone has any experience with both the 8x and 10x slc and if either one is a sronger performer for any reason.

The whole steadiness thing between 8x and 10x i really struggle with. I spent 4.5 hours glassing yesterday using my zeiss victory 10x45 and my meopta hd 8x32. I honesty could not see enough difference to matter. Maybe because the 8x are so much smaller i don’t hold them as steady. But i would pick my 10x every time. I spent some time with my dads 12x meopta as well and shake was not even an issue for me either.
On the other hand i tried to use my meopta spotter at 20x to quickly look at an elk without my tripod as i didnt want to set up and that didn’t work. :) But to each his own as i know everyone has preferences. I have posted this many times, but i just wrap my fingers around the brim of my hat and shake almost goes away. |

Could we please get that carved in stone and written on every water tower ... everywhere? So much of the differences observers claim to see regarding certain aspects of binoculars, they do not because it is below their proven threshold of recognition. The difference between 8x and 10x is without a doubt noticeable to many observers—at least the few who really care. One is a fraction steadier, the other has an image a fraction larger. But most people will not recognize the difference and the birds don’t give a rip. |

My experience tells me that lower powers are easier on the eyes for extended times. A real test is a day in a prairie dog town.

There is absolutely no substitute for "try before you buy". I had about talked myself into upgrading from 8x32 to 10x32s before actually trying them in the field.
On a Russian bear hunt, I got to compare my older Zeiss 8x32's against a brand new pair of Zeiss 10x32's. I found that there was absolutely no difference in the detail I could see, at least in my hands. If I didn't already have good binoculars, the hard choice would be between 8x32 and 8x42. The 8x42 adds a little bulk and weight, but gives me (at least) a slightly better all-around view. |

10x32 you would go down in exit pupil enough to noticably datken the image. So it makes sense to me you would not see as much detail. A 10x42 likely would look much better than the 10x32

Are you mainly a birder? It seems birders ask different things from their binos then most hunters. I don't think many birders are looking at Robins 100 yards away when it's so dark you cant see your hand in front of your face. I know there are major light gathering differences between different hunting optics. I don't really use my optics to search for game. I use them mostly to identify game that's already been spotted and is either too far away or too dark to tell if it's the 5 year old 150 inch 8 point or the 120 inch 3 year old.

At 60yrs old I can't see any significant difference in low light between any reasonably good 8x32 and 8x42. As for 10x, I find it easier to focus an 7x or 8x in low light.
