I thought I knew this, but then someone said something so I am questioning my assumptions.

What makes a Rimfire scope a rimfire scope?
To be or not to be, that is the question. Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or take arms against a sea of troubles, and by opposing, end them.

Having either fixed parallax-free setting adjusted to a shorter distance than "centerfire" scopes (ex: 50 yds / meters), or having parallax adjustment with a minimum focusing distance equal to or less than the min distance you plan to shoot.

Additionally most center fire rifle scopes will have preset parallax settings at 100-150 yards. I.E. Leupold 3-9X40 VX-2 is preset at 150 yards. That's not ideal for rimfire use.
