OK guys, here's a challenge for you:
I'm looking for a scope for my CZ 455 Varmint and what I "think" I want is: 3-4x on the low end, 12-14x on the high end with a 1" tube and a budget of $300 or less. It will mostly be used for range shooting but potentially for hunting. If it has to be parallax-adjustable, I think I'd much prefer side focus. Here's the real kicker: I want to avoid having to change scope rings, so the objective bell can't exceed 2.00" and the Ocular bell can't exceed approx. 1.6". |

A Sightron SII 4-16x42 might be a good fit for your list, but is about $50 over your budget. It has an adjustable objective. There may not be many good choices with side focus in the price range you want.

How about this Vortex?

I like Vortex and the objective bell would work but it looks like the ocular bell is right on the raggedy edge of what will fit. I have a Crossfire II, 2-7x32 that has the same size ocular bell as the Diamondback HP that I could swap over and try.
Assuming I decide I could live with an AO, what is the consensus on the Weaver Classic V, 4-16x? The reason I'm trying to avoid changing out scope rings is that the cheek weld I have using the Warne 721M rings that are currently installed is juussst right. SEMO, the Sightron is a good scope, but I'm not enamored with their reticles. |

OK guys,
I'm REALLY interested in the scope Supertool linked to: http://swfa.com/Vortex-3-12x42-Diamondback-HP-Rifle-Scope-P67743.aspx The only concern I have is that the parallax will only adjust to 30 yds and hunting situations may dictate shots closer than that. How much of an issue is this really? I'd also like to know if the scope will focus properly at 12x at 50yds. Thanks for the help! |

I have a 4x Leupold on my .22. 100 yards set parallax. I have killed tons and tons of p dogs anywhere from 10 yards out to 150ish. If u make sure u are square behind the scope each time u shoot parallax error is pretty much a non issue.

No. Parallax is not for image focus. Its to focus youe reticle so its in the same plane as your target. Plus mine is only 4x. So thats not likely to be an issue

Thanks.
I'll order it as soon as SWFA gets back to me on what they'll give me on trade-in for my Burris FFII 4.5-14x42 and FFII 3-9x40 scopes. Hopefully they won't take long... |

One thing to note on that Vortex, is the FOV. It is a bit lacking vs other scopes with similar mag ranges. That may or may not make a difference to you. It has about 29 feet at 3 x. Most scopes with a 3x are 31ish to 35ish. So FOV wise it will be much more like a 4-12x.

I don't know if it matters or not... Wouldn't likely know until I got it in hand.
Wonder why the FOV is narrower? |

My guess is its just one of the tradeoffs in the optical design for a 3-12x scope with all the features it has and cost only $300.

I'll give it a try. Worst that can happen is that I don't like it and send it back.

Looks like a nice set up. I would be interested to know what kind of grouping you get with certain ammo brands. I've been looking at one of these for myself. Very nice.
