I have a trip coming up where we will be hunting praire dogs. I would want to at least be able to hit them at 300 yards or more.

Is the Vortex PST the 1st focal plane or the 2nd?

Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

For shooting PDs around 300yds, I think the Conquest would be fine and would have an edge over the Viper PST in glass. However the Viper will have more adjustment in elevation, and if it's the 1st focal plane, will be a little more versatile if it has a Mil type reticle.

If you want exceptional quality glass, repeatability, zero stop, and a varmint reticle, I'd go for the Zeiss HD5. One of the best scope purchases I've ever made. I never have jumped on the Vortex bandwagon. Not saying they are bad scopes. I think the features they have are great. But when I'm looking at a tangerine sized head sticking out of the ground at 300+ yards, I want the cleanest, clearest brightest glass I can get. That's the HD5
Good luck |

I have a Leupold VX3 6.5-20x40 long range with the varmint hunters reticle. I simply love it out on a prairie dog town. Couldn't imagine a better scope/reticle combo.
