Getting ready to buy a new scope, however I'm stuck between two options; ED or regular glass. That sounds like a no brainer, but there are some variables involved.
95% of the time will be used for backyard birding at 100 yards. 5% will be at the gun range no longer than 200 yards. I've narrowed my search to two Kowa models, both with a 30x eyepiece. One is the TSN 663M, ED glass, with 66mm objective and the other is aTSN 82SV, regular glass, with 82mm objective. So for my intended use am I better off with a smaller objective and ED glass or a bigger objective and regular glass. Also note that the ED glass would run about $250 more than the regular. Would the ED glass and extra cost produce any benefits over the cheaper, larger objective? All input, comments and opinions are welcome. Thanks

Change your point of view a little. If you are not satisfied with the standard glass how much more, over the $250, will it cost to correct the mistake. For Birding The ED glass will provide better color and definition. Since this is the 95% of your use then ED for sure. The 88 will be brighter but the sharper image would trump it for me.
