Hi all,
Im puttting together a Savage Axis in 223 to use stricltly punching paper. mostly 100 yards with some
300 and 500 yards thrown in. I'm thinking of either the ss16 or 20. Im 60 and dont see as well as i used to. would like to be able to see the holes without using a spotting scope.
Which would the foiks here recommend? and why?
Thanks

I have used both.  I prefer the 16X,  you'll fight mirage with both though.  If your shooting for small groups/benchrest style, neither get my suggestion.  Something like the weaver t36 would be a better option.  If its just to play with then the 16x will be fine, slightly less finicky on eye position.

This is a very old thread, so perhaps it is OK to hijack it a bit and ask SVT, how does the optical quality of the SS 16 or 20 compare to the Weaver T36?

different animals all together honestly.  The T36 is more of a benchrest setup.  Great on a 30BR, from my experience. lol, set the zero in warmups and shoot x's in the match never touching the dials.    The SS is designed to twist the turrets, take abuse, provide more user friendly eyebox.  I would NEVER take a t36 into the field, even for P-Dogging simply due to mirage, eyebox sensitivity, and razor thin, hard to see reticle.  The SWFA 16X has proven itself in the field for me. The only time I've really had issues is with mirage after strings of shooting but I've never taken it out in extreme heat due to knowing it will have mirage and selecting a different tool for the job so to speak.

OPTICALLY, they are similar, with a slight edge to the SWFA SS (could be to the fact that the 16X and 36X are way different mags) but that's where the similarities die.
