A buddy of mine won a Savage .17hmr at a Whitetails banquet over the weekend and is looking for a little help on a scope. I believe the budget will be about $250 or so, he mentioned he would like a 4-12x. I'm not sure if he is thinking of a bdc reticle or just a duplex.

I thought of sightron SII, but they get pricey past the 3-9. There is the Vortex Diamondback 4-12, for about $200, but I don't have any experience with the scope.

Any other suggestions?

Congratulations to your buddy. The 17 HMR is a fun round. The .17 HMR is at its best under 300 yards. The Bullet is not heavy enough to carry much energy past the 300 yard mark. I like the 2-10 scope for more versatility. Check out Samplelist.com for some great deals. There are several Burris that fit in your price range. A 3-9 Sightron II also. There is a 2.5-10 Nikon Monarch 3 if you can stretch up to $299. Need to hurry because these are going away fast. Good Luck.

Out of budget but that gun is begging for a SS 3-15X... Cool

Nikon just announced a new series of rim fire scopes..

They are called the Prostaff 11 3-9x40 & 4-12x40 with the 150 BDC reticle.

I currently have the Vortex 4x12 on a .17hmr and really like it. Started using them on air guns awhile back. Stout scopes with a great warranty!

My CZ452 American in .17hmr has a 3-9x33 with adjustable objective.  I like the wider field of view it offers up close at 3x better than 4x and to my needs for a hunting gun, there is very little that I can't hit with 9x where 12x would make it possible in the field.  I do have a really hard time seeing .17 holes in paper at 100+ yards at 9x but then again even 12x is a little anemic for seeing tiny holes at long distances at times too and at the range even a crummy spotting scope is better than a good low powered hunting scope for such tasks.

The 17 HMR is better than the 22lr because the 17 HMR uses the 22 Winchester Magnum casing.

How does that make .17 HMR “better?” The two rounds are intended for different applications, and most blowback operation rimfire action designs simply won’t work with .17 HMR.

By that reasoning, .280 AI is superior to .221 Fireball because the former is based off the .30-06 case.

When shooting gray squirrels I can't tell much difference between the destruction of the squirrel between the 1250 fps 22s and the 17HMR. Both blow equally large holes. The 17HMR higher velocity and terminal energy stops armadillos much better. Doing it without leaving much of a visible hole. The higher terminal energy is well contained inside the armadillo's shell. Wink That said the 17 Mach 2 is still using the .22 rimfire case, just necked down to .17. The bullets velocity helps the  accuracy and energy for a ways, but the 40 gr .22 will carry farther out after the 17gr drops off. This is from the lower BC. of the .17 gr. bullet. It can't buck the air density as well. Therefore the .17 bullet will lose velocity faster  than the 40 gr .22 giving it more energy at longer range.

I've never had a 17 HMR but if he plans to hunt this he might want to condiser a scope with lower than 4x on the bottom end. If its a target use or from a solid rest then magnification is nice. Vortex has a great warranty but I would watch SWFA and see what good values you can find.

I don't know, Wes... 4x is pretty OK for all around use.

Right 4x certainly can be done but I really enjoy the 2-7 scopes I have on rimfire for a hunting scope.  I did link a deal on the 4-12 he was interested in.
