There's a lot of confusion about various woods called "ironwood." There are many different trees called by the generic term, most of them entirely different species that only share the trait of being hard and have no other relation to each other.

A buddy of mine was considering building a deck behind his house out of "ironwood," but the wood he was considering isn't the same species as the tree discussed above, and he wouldn't even be able to buy enough of it to build a deck, much less find individual pieces large enough. The Sonoran Desert variety is the only species in its genus and is becoming very rare, for the reasons discussed.

Here's a good description of the "Olneya Tesota" Sonoran desert ironwood:

Since it is a protected species, you can only harvest old growth dead wood, and there are strict regulations on any wood taken out. It's therefore very difficult to find a very large piece of the stuff. If you do, it will run in the $100s, sometimes $1000s. The Sonoran Desert is so regulated/protected, in most areas you aren't allowed to bring in motorized vehicles. This further drives up the cost.

This is the full extent of the range the Sonoran desert ironwood exists, and all of it is protected status:

If you got some of the desert stuff, I would definitely sell it rather than burn it, as it brings high $ on Ebay, well into the thousands. Haha!

Man, have I got a deal for you!

If you's settin' fire to actual real-deal desert ironwood, STOP NOW! I'll trade you equal volume of nice, seasoned pecan wood and pay for shipping both ways. Desert ironwood smells like sweaty @zz when heated and emits toxic vapors anyway. You don't want none o' that! Much better to use nice, aromatic pecan that emits the smell of BBQ instead!

No need to thank me; it's just a part of my giving nature!Big Grin

Take that back... I'll give you DOUBLE the volume of pecan in exchange.

Only because Skip just gave me the impression he doubted my altruistic nature.
