I just purchased a ruger M77 all weather stainless .243  I've had 3-9x40's before on rifles but, I'd like to go with a higher power scope.  My price range is up to $300.  I'll be shooting varmint (woodchucks mainly) and deer hunt with it.  My price range hinders me quite a bit.  I don't need the best thing out there, I'm not that good of a shot!  I was thinking up to a 2-10x or even up to 12x variable.  I know the burris scope for $200 is a hell of a deal (maybe thats all I need anyways).  I like the mil-dot reticle (I'd like any suggested choices to have it, if the brand has the reticle avalible) and I'm learning how to use it properly.  I shoot usually 100-300 yards and, on a windless day I'll try to shoot up to 450 yards.  I want to use the stock ruger rings that come with the gun I think their mediums which, I'm not sure if 50mm will fit??  I believe the stock rings are one inch.  I should know that heh.  Thanks to anyone in advance that leaves me a suggestion.  Happy shooting!

For 20 bucks over your budget you could get the Burris 4.5-14x42 w/spotter scope. Cory's suggestion is a good one also. The Ruger rings shouldn't be a problem with either scope.
