The problem becomes the eye relief of rifle scopes is typically too short to use with a pistol that has significant recoil. I use an aimpoint 9000L in 30mm rings on my encore. I have had the Burris 3-12x but anything over about 7x was too short of eye relief for 45-70. One of the guys on here has had some tactical scopes modified to have longer eye relief and shoots handgun at extreme long range.

I see lot of guys using high powered rifle scopes at silhouette matches but as noted above, recoil is the killer of that set-up and these are being used with very low recoil rounds. Without a brake, a 15" bull barrel in 223 is borderline.

Some of the long range handgunners are using rifle scopes but everything is set-up with big brakes. "Muscle brakes" I believe are popular along with others of similar design.

It can be done, just make sure to do the research to get it set up right.
