Looking for my first pair of binos. Looking to spend around $200-$300. Only real requirements I have is it needs to be durable. Been looking at the vortex diamondback and leupold cascades. Any other options would be great! Gonna be used for hunting elk and also spotting birds and coyotes etc. thanks guys

If you could up your budget by $60 I would go with the Swift 8.5x44.

If you are looking at 8.5x45 choices, great for a hunting bino, you might still be able to find the Nikon Monarch X 8.5x45 on closeout for about $300.00.

Worth checking the bino specs to see if they meet your needs : weight, field of view, eye relief, accessories all important to enjoying your kit in the field.  I'd look to buy from a retailer with a good return policy if I couldn't get try in store.
Be nice !

Pyro, I have the 10X42 Diamondbacks for work.  They really are decent binos for the price.  Plus you get backed by Vortex.

I've had a Pair of those Pentax porros (mentioned) for a few years and I have no complaints at all with them. They are very good and have been down many roads and on many hunts.

With glasses I always have trouble with binoculars and have been looking at the Vortex monoculars but I have not bought one yet. They make an 8x36 monocular that is a tactical version and has mil based marks.

Have you considered a pair of vintage binocs?

If you check ebay, there are numerous listed from "WW2 US Navy", some of them are of excellent quality.

And if you look carefully, there are occasional WW2 German binoculars such as Hensoldt, Leitz and Zeiss.

The German optics of that era are better than the Allied, but also, the price now is higher.

I have a pair of Hensoldt-Wetzlar 7x56 for sale now, if interested, ask?

Update time, i still havent purchased a pair of binos yet. Im planning to at the end of the month.

Ive decided to go with an 8x42 instead of a 10x model.

Does anybody in here have experience with the vortex diamondback and or the zen-ray zrs??? Any input would be much appreciated!!!

If you are looking for a good, workable, field worthy glass for not a lot of money, there are not two better choices than either the Diamondback or the ZRS HD.  I happen to prefer the ZRS because it fits my hands better, but there is no significant, practical differences that amount to much.

There may be some long term durability issues as there has to be something compromised to get the view at the price, but still either should last quite a while with normal use.

The Vortex may be easier to obtain as there are a lot of dealers who stock Vortex glass.  I'm a longtime fan of the Zen Ray product, but they are more difficult to get ahold of.  I happen to have the ZRS HD in both 8x32 and 8x42.  I have several Vortex optics, just not a Diamondback binocular, although I have compared several to the ZRD HD.

figured id better update this thread since i did purchase a set of binos... I went with the Leupold bx-2 cascades in 8x42. My initial response to them was a neat compact package. They come with a plastic one pice protector for the eye pieces and flip-off style caps for the bells. The eye cups have adjustable lengths which is nice. For the price, they seemed nice. Ive used them at work and upland hunting. They seem very serviceable.. I found they fit my smaller sized hands pretty well. My one complaint and its got nothing to do with the binos is the cloth carrying case, the Velcro came unglued almost right away...
