Something in a 12-42 and a large objective.

I just started shooting F Class this year. I shot F/TR and was competitive at 600 yard and not as much at 1000. I attribute that largely to a 308 and a 1-12 twist barrel. I'll be shooting a 284 Winchester by mid Nov and now I'm scope shopping. The 12*42 Nightforce is prevalent on my range and I could swing it financially by Spring but I shot so well with the fixed 20 power by SWFA that I'd really rather stay with them. Any talk of an F Class/Target scope or will SWFA stay producing scopes that are specific to the tactical market?

Thanks!
Dan

SWFA has, so far, put their scopes into the tactical market, and there is little ROI in the bench market, mostly. Maybe.

Someone from SWFA can weigh in, but I would guess they will not be developing scopes over 20X for a bench market.

Its a shame. I really did well in f/tr with their 20 power. I shot averaged 191 in my first season with the fixed 20 power at 600. It really got fun when I went to the 155 SMK. I got some strange looks when I laid down with a mostly stock SPS 700 and a 20 inch barrel and shot a 195. If anyone is shooting a 1-12 twist the 155SMK and a hot load of varget will get it done out to 600.

If you are looking at something less expensive than Nightforce with high magnification, you should take a look at the various Sightron S3 scopes.  They have the following models that might appeal to you: 6-24x50, 8-32x56 and 10-60x60.

For what you do, figure out what is the highest magnification scope that still gives you the adjustment range you want and go for that.

Of course, if you are ready to really spend some money, look at March scopes.  They were designed with what you do in mind.  They are expensive though.

I doubt we will see a variable over 20x but it all depends on how much of a market there is for something.  I have had the fixed 20x and it is best suited for bright daylight.  If there was enough of a market for a fixed with higher magnification it could be possible.  Leupold has fixed power competition scopes in  25, 30, 35, 40, & 45.    Weaver has fixed power T series in 24, & 36.  I have no idea how many of those get sold but if there was enough of a market a fixed 35x or 40x  could be worth some discussion.   I never expected to see the fixed 12X but its out there.    What do you guys think is a fixed 40X SS a possible?

Anything is possible, but there would have to be a market for it.

Weaver T scopes are around $440.
Leupold Competition scopes are in the $650 to $1100 range.

Sightron S3 scopes are around $1000 or so.

For target shooting, one of the bigger problems with variable scopes is weight.  If weight is not a concern, I would get a Sightron 8-32x56 and be done with it.  It weighs 26 ounces to Leupold Competition's 20 ounces.

Unless SWFA can make something like a 35x50 fixed power scopes that weighs 20 ounces, costs less than $700 and tracks repeatably, I probably would not bother.

I agree that the price point would have to come in at less than the s3. I've shot those and the nightforce.

I'm shooting f/open next year so I've got 22lbs to work with. I'm looking to get a higher powered variable like the s3 10-50x60. I think if SWFA could come in with the tracking that I see from my 20x and a 12x42(or higher)x50 or so and could hit a price point of about 800-900 dollars I'd be into it. I'd say at 1k I go to a sightron and if I'm spending more than 1100 I'd wait a week and but the nightforce. I have no idea about if my request is reasonable as a consumer. I'm clueless of their cost structure but I am a fan of their product.

We all are fans of the SS scopes and realize that a great deal of effort went into the design of each of the new models that we have enjoyed over the last few years.

Ilya:    What makes more sense to you a 30x or 40x based on the original fixed SS 20x42 or one based on the HD version fixed power SS HD  10x42  and how critical do you think it would be that it be a larger objective if its a daylight (prairie dog - range queen) scope.  I loved the HD 10x but it was not enough magnification for me to not lug a spotting scope along.  I would absolutely love a scope based on the HD fixed power but at least 16x and I think it would be fun to play with a 30x or 40x.

Ted: what scope are you using on your prairie dog set up in 204 Ruger?  Also what power do you usually find most useful for prairie dogs?

In my opinion, the current 10x42HD configuration would do well up to 16x or so.
I am not a big fan of the classic 20x42 either, for the record.

In order to go to higher magnifications, I would like to see a bump in objective lens size to at least 50mm and an increase in the overall length of the scope by at least an inch.

I have extensive experience with scopes that top out at about 24x to 30x and in order for that magnification to be truly useful with a 42mm objective lens, you have bump the quality up to something like the March scopes.

It is MUCH easier to get good image quality at high magnification with a larger objective lens and longer overall length.

Thanks
ILya

In that case I doubt we will see one.  I had a 20x42 SS and I much prefer the 16X42 SS.  I would love to see an HD in a 16x42 but that probably wont happen either.  I have never owned one over 24x on the top end and have been really happy with the SS 5-20x50 and probably need another of those.
