I'm being tempted by this custom Ruger Charger and looking at possible scope options.  This is a 50-100 yard plinker or perhaps to add some challenge with prairie dogs.

Thinking the Aimpoint 9000 makes the most sense.

Instead of rehashing the recommendations that have already been posted, let me ask a different question.

What are the consideration one should take in to account when selecting a hand gun scope?

Purpose:  Seems to be a driving factor in any optics discussion.  Target shooting/hunting...etc.

Shooting position:  Off of a bench, cradled in arm or typical extended position when shooting a handgun

Caliber:  Extended eye relief would be desired the heavier the caliber to keep the scope out of your eye after shooting.

For my purpose, the Charger would be a target/hunting rifle.  Shooting position would be extended either off of a bench, bipod or supported position.  Caliber being a 22 LR, not concerned about recoil.

Is there a downside to the longer eye relief typical of a hand gun scope?  Smaller field of view?

Variable hand gun scopes offer the advantage of higher magnification, but eye relief changes and with it your shooting position.  Pulling the pistol in seems unnatural but perhaps it is more about training.

See a number of people are advocates of rifle scopes on handguns like the Encore, XP100, Striker and CFP.  Caliber would come in play here but can see the advantage of less extreme swings in eye relief even though you are shooting in a tucked position.

The longer eye relief Handgun scope is designed for this use. I have the (200299) 2-7 Burris Ballistic Plex handgun scope on a Anschutz 64LP It has proven a fun setup. AKA (The Possom Popper!)

Now that is a slick looking set up and well thought out with the left handed bolt.

What makes getting behind the scope difficult?  Head position?  Eye box?

I remember when I put a variable on my Super Redhawk, it seemed I was always dancing behind the revolver trying to get a clear sight picture.  Ended up keeping it on 2x.

Some handgun scopes, the Nikon 2.5-8 comes to mind, the eye relief changes a LOT as you adjust the power. They may have changed this with the Force series though. All the Leupolds and Burris's are pretty good but expensive. The Weaver 4x28 is nice and affordable if you don't mind the 50 yard parallax. Ernie Bishop is the man when it comes to scoped handguns, send him a pm.

Thanks.  Just pinged him.  His Steel and Prairie Dogs thread is what got this bug started.

Keeping the arm at full extension helps to stay behind the scope. The Bipod is the best money spent in the setup. Nickel to quarter sized groups are common with the use of consistent lots of ammunition.  The TR1 light will reach out past 125 yards at night. The Burris ballastic plex reticle will match well with the 12" barrel providing quick shot acquisition up to 150 yards with the 22 lr rounds. The only thing It really needs is a suppressor.

The Maple finish is cool on the Charger. Is that a thread protector on the barrel of the Charger?

Thanks.  Had the Burris 3-12X in the shopping cart but SWFA must have sold out.  It is a threaded barrel.

Hadn't thought about the light, but with a suppressor, would make for some fun shooting after the lights go out.

I use riflescopes on my mine.
Better glass
Better reticle
Better FOV
More adjustment which is key for any LR shooting with a 22lr.
I've shot out to 500 yards with mine on pd's and on steel out to 400 yards with hits

Direction I'm going.  Have a SWFA 3-15x and a Nikon Monarch 4-16x that are candidates for the charger.  Both have side focus, which should help.

Aimpoint 9000L is another one that is in the running.  Would make for some fast shooting in close, but utility will be limited beyond 100 yards or where precision is the objective.

I think you will be surprised at the accuracy possible with the charger. Riflescope would be good to try before you spend the $ on the red dot

If you go over to the specialty pistols forums you may find some more insight there.

Good advice.  I was hanging out there a week or so ago, when I landed the Charger.  Lots of good info.

All you need to add is a bipod and a wedge bag for the rear and your ready to go
