I want to be able to shoot long distance someday 400-1000 yards if I can find a place. I am shooting a bushmaster AR 10 ORC .308 16" standard bbl. I use it for hog hunting and it's great. I also have my new SWFA 3x15 ss tactical scope and it is awesome. My question is I don't know what ammo I should use; never done it. I use Winchester 168 gr. ballastic silver tip and my gun loves it. It flattened a hog tue. Night at 100 yards. Maybe some of you can help me. I live north of nashville tennessee and there is hills all over here. Just moved from flatland of Texas and there doesn't seem to be any flat place here.
Thanks

What you have will make shots out to 1000yds. You may consider loading ammo for that purpose and I'd prefer a bolt action but again your rig can do it. There is a place in the western part of VA that can go a long way toward helping you accomplish your goals. Dan Newberry at Bangsteel shooting range is as good as anyone I've met in the field of shooting distance. http://www.bangsteel.com/ If you don't or can't load ammo for this, Dan can help you narrow the choices on factory options. Check out their web site and shoot Dan a email on your goals. And to be realistic I should mention that your AR10 platform is not ideal but, don't let that stop you from trying. Good luck!

P.S. Long distance don't start until 600yds. Most hunting rifles will do 500+. (I threw that in for some other guys. I'm not pickin on you Ds1962).

Also to offer a answer to your question about ammo. I can make a suggestion for reloading but I'm not up to date on factory ammo. I would try 175 Berger match bt long range target loaded to around +/- 2600fps . For your AR platform they should offer sufficient weight and accuracy to give you reasonable success.

Thanks, if I could shoot to 600 that would be good. I should have been specific, but I was talking about landowner property instead of ranges.

In simplest terms, the rifle picks the best ammo, not you.  Look for larger projectiles with good ballistic coefficients - and shoot them all at more than 100 yards.

We can make recommendations, but the rifle might not like the ammunition.

Also keep in mind the drop on most factory ammo boxes is based on a 22" or 24" barrel, your initial velocities will be lower.

I too have a 16" AR in 308, love it, great for killing piggies.
