    Posted: January/02/2014 at 02:42
I recently purchased a weatherby vanguard sub moa, 270 wsm in the gun library at Cabela's. I have had it out twice at the range to sight in a new 4 x 12 x42 mm Redfield Revenge. The first time it sighted in "ok" at a 100 yards but no sub MOA. The 2nd time was at 200 yards with a newly cleaned barrel and I felt like I had just driven off of a cliff. ( a very tall cliff) The first 3 shots were in or around the bull and I felt pretty impressed. Then every shot after that began to creep farther and farther away. I decided to let the gun cool down completely while I ran a snake through it several times to clean the bore out a little. Low and behold the next 10 shots did not even find the paper. The shots were so far off I could not even figure out where they were going.

Needless to say I left the range with my head hung in shame. I have been searching the internet all day to see if I could find the answer to this phenomenon. Apparently this happens to some of the Weatherby's from time to time and "nobody" knows how to explain it. I am really hoping that someone can shed some light.

How are your scope mounts/scope?
have you tested a known scope on it since?

You have to let them cool down after a few shots, my 300WSM will go from 1/4" MOA for 2 shots to 4moa if i try to shoot more than that at a time. They heat up, QUICK.

Sounds like a scope and or a scope mounting issue, Friend.

Do you have another scope you can try out? What type of mounting system do you use?

I guess it could be a mounting issue. I let Cabela's mount it for me when I bought the gun. I use the same scope on my Remington 700 standard 270 cal and it is a match made in heaven. Same thing with my Remington 700 Sendero 300 RUM, never a problem they are both steady as a rock. Prior to buying the Weatherby I had been hearing they were extremely accurate and wanted to see for myself. Of course now I am hearing how the barrels tend to overheat and flex when you shoot as wwell as problems as to whether the barrel is floated or not. Mine is not floated and is anchored at the front end of thestock.

I have a new Redfield 6 x 18 x 44 mm I can put on myself to check the possible issues with the mount and scope. I csn also float the barrel so it is anchored at the begining of the barrel rather than the end, but I have (also heard) the reason these particular model/caliber Weatherby's are anchored at the end is because of the barrel flex when it heats up and the best "fix" is with a harmonic balancer, however I don't know if a harmonic balancer can be installed on a gun with a barrel break.

Decisions, decisions I think I'll change out the scope as it is easy to check out and if that doesn't solve the problem the I'll check the front anchor point and make sure it is stable. If it is not I'll repair that and if it is then I'll go ahead and float the barrel and see what effect that has.

Thanks for you're help.

I know on the light profile barrels they want a pressure point.
I got a 7mm08 in with a light profile and it has one and shoots .3" groups, I left alone.

I've heard the Weatherby tends to overheat. This is what I have decided to try; I just sent this post to another blogger, let me know what you think.

You may be right. I am looking at mine right now and the barrel appears to be loose where there is supposed to be a pressure point. I can actually move the barrel around quite a bit. All the bolts appear to be tight. It could very well be the pressure point has broken free.

Check one thing at a time.  No way to know what fixed it if you go changing it all at once.

Last night I disassembled it and checked the pressure point. One side was touching and the other side was worn down completely. There were also random places along the entire length of the stock the where the barrel was touching. Some previous owner had gone in there with some kind of wood putty which caused numerous pressure points all along the barrel. Anyway, I spent most of the night sanding to clear the length of the barrel. I then reseated the front pressure point in the front and also where the barrel beds to the aluminum blocks at the back of the barrel. There was about 1/4 " of play there. I used JB weld on both front and back. The barrel now only has 2 contact points and no front to rear movement. I am happy now with the way the barrel is seated.

As for the scope mounts; I am going to change them out to a weaver style tonight. Right now it has the type of mounts on the rear that can be loosened with 2 horizontal bolts and actually swivel the rear of the scope to the left or right. I have never liked these types of mounts because they almost always seem to move on you. Then I'll bore sight it and take it to the range in the morning. Keep your fingers crossed and I'll let you know how it shot tomorrow.

I bet she shoots better now. Thanks for letting us know. Some other shooter out there may be having similar problems and your post, if they run across it, may possible help them.

I have a dislike for front loaded or pressure point forearm sets. I hope your work pays off and we will know as soon as you get some trigger time. Just want to throw this out there in case you notice a problem. If when you fire your first round it prints away from all other shots it is referred to as a cold bore flyer. I have seen this a lot with pressure set rifles. And Remington will tell you if you remove the point it will void their warranty. I have found that for rifles that throw cold bore flyers removing that point and making sure the barrel is free floated from barrel lug to end of the forearm does away with the problem (most of the time). So I usually ask the customer which they value more the warranty or cold bore accuracy.
Look forward to hearin how it does. Good shootin!!
And welcome to the OT!

Thanks. I Have never heard of a cold flyer before but it makes perfect sense. The gun has no warranty so I have no problem with making adjustments. I used JB Weld in in the barrel lug compartment to stop the back and forth movement the barrel had. By doing that it also set the barrel up for free floating. All I would have to do is pop the JB Weld out from the forearm pressure point and it is done. And it makes sense to make it free floated because the only rifles I ever had thet had the pressure point up front were rim fire rifles. Hopefully I can get on the range tomorrow and find out. I'll let you know.

Well, apparently we were on the right track. Replacing the Leupold scope bases with the Weaver base has solved any problems I had with the rear of the scope moving left and right and as soon as I Loctite the screws in it will be I shouldn't ever have to mess with them again.

Now as far as the more obvious problem of barrel pressure point; I guess I got lucky 1 more time. The gun is now shooting groups (groups of three all in the bull (at 100 yds) and most times at least 2 of of the holes touching. I am really pleased with how it all turned out.
Now if I can get it to reprod AT 200 YDS I'LL CALL IT A DONE DEAL

See it wasn't that bad. Weak base and or rings are a high percentage of the problems many people have. No matter how much you spend on a scope. If it is weak where attached to the rifle, it will never be a consistent shooter.
