Is it just me or has anyone noticed that the mounting depth of manufactured ammunition varies considerably from round to round in the same box of ammo? Lets say roughly 1/16-3/64th of an inch variation. I have noticed this with Remington and Winchester that i have bought recently. Is there any concern with that possibly affecting accuracy?

It can absolutley affect accuracy. That is one reason to roll your own so you have more control.

Handloading not only enables you to get all the seating depths uniform, but also lets you tailor the exact depth for a given load to achieve maximum precision in your rifle.

Out of my lurking at the local sporting goods store, i noticed that the federal Premium Vital shocks are a lot more uniform as far as seating goes. Just havent spent the cash $46 a box to find out how well they shoot. Hoping to hear back on a loading press soon to see if i will be reloading by next year.

For now, it's a treasure hunt, trying to find just about anything associaited with hand loading- dies, powder, bullets. The stuff is out there, just maybe not when you need it, or try to find it. You may have noticed that the same is true of factory ammo.

Irregular seating depth results in round to round irregularity of case volume, which means inconsistent pressures, which means inconsistent velocities = poor accuracy.
