I agree with Bigdaddy. I'll wager that the muzzle brake is the culprit. I can't see the bore size from your pics but its been my experience that the magnum cals generally do better with a oversized bore. Regardless of port size or number. I built a custom brake for a friends 300wm and after building it to spec. had to open the bore twice to get it back to shooting as before. It still provided great recoil reduction and shot like he wanted it to. Unless they used red locktite you should be able to remove the brake but, I don't recommend shootin without a thread protector/muzzle blank. I'm sure that on that barrel diameter there isn't much metal there at the threads. If you didn't have one made when you had the work done they should be able to make you one for a reasonable price. In fact they can make one to match your threads and if you give them the muzzle diameter they can get pretty close without the gun. If getting the gun to them is a problem. Good Luck!! Referring to Bigdaddy's post too, if a brake ain't on straight you'll know it right away!! |

http://www.smithenterprise.com/products06.03.html I dont use a break I perfer the Smith Vortex flash suppressor because it saves your night vision in low light and might allow you to get off a second shot.
Cleaning from the rear is good using a hard cleaning rod from the bore can damage or wear on the crown causing degraded accuracy over time.

Im pretty sure i cannot remove the brake from the barrel. Ill try shooting it with the new rings, and if i am still getting bad results i will go back to the gunsmith who did the work and go from there. fingers crossed that's not the issue. |

I havent used the metal rods on my gun for a while now, i have the cable cleaning kit and then the bore snake. I never cared for the metal rods but when i used those i cleaned from the rear as i did not want to damage the crown.

Sgt D here's a pic of the muzzle next to a round for the gun. If i insert the bullet from the front of the muzzle the neck of the case stops it. As i do not have a caliper to measure the size, that may give you an idea of how close the the caliber the inside diameter of the break is

Can you drop the bullet into the brake? I know it wont go all the way down but it should go down to the original barrel before it stop. with a .308 the ID of the brake should be around .318--.320 that give .005 on each side. That is if I remember correctly.

That was the perfect test without calipers. And supports my thinking that the bore is too tight. By the book it is enough and not showing any signs of misalignment but, I am confident that opening the brake bore to .350ish will solve the problem. A 11/32 to a 23/64 bit would be about right. Your gunsmith may or may not agree but I think your gonna find that the scope or mounts are not the problem. In fact now that I look at my charts you would probably be safe cutting it to .375 (3/8) and get your accuracy back and good recoil reduction. Just a reminder on the brake system. The point is to deflect gas thru ports causing forward thrust against the brake ports thus reducing felt recoil. With magnum cals there is massive pressure and gas release and a tight brake bore is not necessary to get the desired effect. In fact I'm convinced that a more open bore and larger ports are far more effective. Aesthetics is one reason you see so many small muzzle brakes, trying to match barrel diameter but limiting overall function. Good Luck with it! Keep us informed on your progress. |

So i finally went out to go shoot today and i believe the rings were the problem. I managed to shoot a couple sub moa groups at 100 yds and even a sub moa group at 200. Thank you guys for your help and insight to my issues.100yd
200yd i know these arent competition groups but i am happy with them and they are much better than last time i took the gun out. After going out a few more times before hunting this year i should be able to tighten them up a little more.

Got the chance to go out friday and try shooting out to 300yds. I had 3 different types of ammo to try.
1) Remington premier Core Lokt Ultra Bonded 300 Win Mag 180 gr 2) Winchester Power Max Bonded 300 Win Mag 180 gr 3) Remington Hyper Sonic 300 Win Mag 180 gr Bonded Over all these 3 bullets shot pretty close. The best groups i got were with the Core Lokt Premier ultra bonded. Here's a couple pictures. I was shooting out of the sled and learning to dial my turrets to zero in from 100-300 yds. Not much of a difference but i need to start some where. Also had a cross wind from right to left about 10mph+ and it was 105*. That mirage sure does make a big difference looking down range..... 300yds with the Core Lokt ultra Last 5 shots 300yds was a mix of the 2 types of Remington Rounds This group was 300 yds with the Winchester Power Max Bonded bullets. They Drop a little bit more than either of the remingtons
