Does anyone have experience with Savage rifles having adjustable muzzle brakes? I am thinking about the "long range hunter" model or the "bear hunter" model in 300 win mag and was curious if adjusting the muzzle brake on or off has any affect on the point of impact. If I sight in and practice using the muzzle brake to take some of the recoil, if I switch it off for my hunt will my settings still be good?

That's a good question. I wouldn't think there would be a POI change, (much), but then again, your just going to have to try and see I recon.

I have a friend that bought the long range hunter in .308. It didn't do much, didn't effect the point of impact, and really didn't effect recoil either, maybe a little, but not much. But anyhow, the brake eventually broke and he took it off like everyone else I know of who bought one. I will tell you though, that gun shoots lights out, and is worth every penny he paid for it, brake or not.

Thanks for the input. I wondered what the shelf life would be on an 'adjustable' muzzle brake- also good to know that it wasn't very effective reducing recoil. I agree on the (Savage) accuracy! So I have my caliber picked out, just trying to pick out my model.

I wouldn't hesitate to get the long range hunter, that is my personal favorite of all the savages. I have a spare Stevens action waiting for the parts to show up to make it just like one.

Just ordered a Savage Long Range Hunter in 300 win mag. Now for the scope...haven't been in the scope market for a couple years. I think the last two I bought were a Black Friday super sniper package deal from SWFA a couple years back (great scopes by the way).
Suggestions? I like the concept of the Nikon 'spot on' app with the BDC reticles. |
