I want to know what is the best hunting scope for my savage mark ii 22 LR. I was lookin at Weaver, vortex, hawke, Nikon, and ole bushnell. I want the best durability and image quality, also I want it to hold its zero. I'm not goin over 150. Any opinions? I either want a 50 yard parallax 4x or 2-7; or an AO 3-9, and no bigger than 40mm. I like the look of more compact scopes by the way.

Best rimfire hunting scope for under $130? I'd have to say a Weaver RV4 and best under $150? A Weaver RV7. If you decide to scrap the budget I'd add a Leopold VX-1 Rimfire to the list but the Weavers are pretty darn good.

Well, weavers are amazing quality, but for half the price at 60 bucks I can get a Hawke sport HD 4x32 with AO. Is the weaver worth TWO of the Hawkes? Lol

I don't put $60 scopes on my rifles but if you like the Hawk buy it. I know my Weaver Classic scopes won't fail me when I need them. BTW I'm not big on AO for a low magnification hunting scope because stopping to focus slows your shot. 9x and above sure but why 4x?
I'm experimenting with a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 Rimfire with BDC but it's over your budget and I haven't gotten any trigger time with it yet. I bought it specifically because it does not have AO because I wanted faster shots.

Do you have the money to buy the Hawke, just to find out the quality it has. or get the Weaver and be happy with a good scope for the money. My favorite will be the 2-7 Weaver. The 4X Weaver will also serve you well for years to come. If you have never looked past a $60 scope you may never realize what you are missing and be content. Who knows? |

The Weaver 2.5-7x28 rimfire is a solid choice I have one on my 22.

Haven't hunted with it, but used a Weaver 2.5-7 on a Savage .22 yesterday at an indoor range. The lighting was pretty dim, but I had no trouble seeing the reticle against a mostly black target, and it wasn't too thick to cover up a small point of aim out to 50 yds. Based on that, previous experience with a Weaver 1-3 on a Marlin lever-action, and the recommendations of experienced people on this board, I'd take a close look at that model.
If you want to see how it looks mounted, I posted a photo on the Range Report section of this board yesterday. I'd be happy to post pictures of the scope and reticle if that would be useful to you. Good luck with your search. |

I am waiting on the Mueller APV which will arrive Friday and I will mount on my new CZ 455 17 HMR. Don't have the rifle yet..coming in from Gunbroker seller.
I will report on my impressions. I read only good things about that scope. I also use a Weaver Grand Slam, Leupy Mark 4 and a Vortex Viper PST. I will compare to those scopes. I know they are made in China. But I am willing to try that scope out on this rifle just to see how it goes. I may just buy the Mueller 30mm tactical scope..under 200 bucks, just to see how it workss. |

I just went through this myself. I wasn't up at all on low power, moderate priced scopes for a .22.
I wanted a scope for hunting small game and turkey out to around 70 yards taking head/neck shots. I ended up getting the Weaver 2.5-7. When comparing it to similar scopes; The Nikon was not as clear or sharp. It had better contrast and sharpness than Leupold. It was optically just better than the Vortex rimfire. I did not like the Mueller at all, to fricken' big for my needs. With the ballistic chart of the match ammo I'm going to use my zero has an impact of +.5 at 22 yards and -.5 at 76 yards well within the accuracy I need. Now all I need to find are the correct BC flip open sizes for the scope! |
