But if we are hunting unicorns, purely from a tactical perspective...

I agree Rustic, especially when S&W makes the M&P without the thumb safety. Why void a warrenty, and possibly affect reliability, when you can buy what you want off the shelf, and have both.

Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

The move back to the 1911 was probably one based on the fact the the guys making decisions on what to buy are about my age more than any other factor. We started with the 1911 and the M14 and we liked them -- they worked. The first 1911 I had was bought in 1969. That said the first handgun I could actually hit something with reliable was a Colt Python bought in 1979 but I learned to love the 1911 because it always went bang. While there was about a ten year learning curve to be able to consistently acquire targets, I can shoot fairly well now. I guess we should mention that the acquired targets were the heads of snakes in the little ponds along the gulley on the farm in Martindale Texas. So becoming proficient with any handgun requires time behind the trigger and lots of ammo. While I have owned and carried many handguns in the course of my Law Enforcement career I will say that yesterday on my day off I carried a 1911 Colt commander. But when I go to work my duty gun is a Glock 22. My glock 35 is here next to me. I find that I am very comfortable with either a 1911 or a Glock but I carry a Glock with its higher capacity mag when there is an increased chance that I will need more ammo. I will also say that I have carried a Beretta 92F 9mm on duty and I truely do not like that pistol, you could not give me one for free. I have carried Sig Sauer P220 on duty and I very much like that pistol but dont have one currently. I have carried H&K P9s .45 on duty as a backup in the plate carrier of the vest and liked it very much. And I have a true fondness for Smith and Wesson and Colt .357 and 44mag revolvers and would gladly carry either on duty. And I am quite convinced that the world is a safer place every day that I carry a handgun and wear a badge to protect the innocent. As far as what is better a 1911 or a glock there is no wrong answer they both have worked well for me but the 1911 feels like an old friend Im comfortable with it and I suspect that is the same for the Marines making the decision.

Now if only we will go back to a 7.62 infantry weapon, all will be right with the world.
