Recently I purchased a CZ 452 Military Trainer 22 LR. My old Marlin 39 needs some work and the ground squirrels were pretty thick. I bought it with a Simmons 4x32 22 MAG scope. The Simmons is OK, but it didn’t take too long before I figured out I wanted something different. Question was, just what was out there these days? The way it stood I did not want to spend any more than about $100.00. Nobody locally had anything but BSA, Bushnell, and Simmons rimfire scopes. After looking around I decided it was between a Weaver and a Nikon Prostaff. I have lots of Leupold scopes and like them but their rimfire scopes were a little pricey for right at the present time. I’d talked some to a Vortex dealer who comes to our local gun show and I remembered him telling me about the new line of Crossfire scopes that Vortex had in the cooker. I called him up; yes he had some, and so I decided to order one. He’s not far away from me, so it was in the mailbox the day after I ordered it. These have sold out to stock on hand and no new ones will be to dealers untill early September. As with any scope on this particular rifle, the rings have
to be a medium height with around 0.75” height.
I wound up using Physical Appearance The Crossfire is a nice looking scope. It is not what I’d call compact, but it looks right at home on the CZ. It is only some 11 inches long, so it is not large either. The scope has a large ocular (another point in favor of the higher rings) with a quick focus ring. The power ring is easy to the feel and seems to be just about right. The magnification can be changed reasonably easy. The quick focus is sharp and precise and has shown no tendency to move from where I set it. The rig has spent lots of time on the rack on the front of the 4-wheeler and riding in a scabbard style case behind the seat of my pickup. I’ve busted a pile of squirrels in the past couple of weeks with this rig. The scope is a nice flat matte black, a good match for the finish of the CZ. It comes with a set of clear rubber cord connected caps that cover the lenses and it also comes with a dust cover which fits over the whole scope. It has reasonably high turrets, resettable to zero, and
covered with a typical screw on cap. The
dials are finger adjustable, are in ¼ “increments and the movement is sharp and
precise. The feel is the same turning
both ways and the “click” is positive and definite. I did not do any serious testing such as
shooting the box to see how accurate the movement is, but I have shot enough
targets with several types of ammo to know the increments are very close to the
specification. The scope is marked
Vortex 2-7x32 on each side of the ocular, has Crossfire across the top of the
ocular and a +0- scale for marking focus
direction. The Vortex logo is stamped on
one of the turret caps, and is also present on each side of the ocular. It is also marked Vortex Optics Optical Performance This is what I was really concerned about in the first place.

Nice review Klamath, I was just talking to a buddy of mine the other day and we both agreed that we needed to replace our BSA sweet 22's with some better optics. I will be watching for this one to hit the shelves at SWFA.

I eventually decided that anything that shoots various brands of bulk box ammo to 1/2" at 50 yards deserves a scope. Might be cheaper to get a smith to mill the things off than to spend the money on a CZ 452 LUX. The last blinkin' thing I want on a 22 LR ranch gun anyway is a fancy walnut stock. That plain beech is just fine with me. I might even see if there's a synthetic for them anywhere.
The backwards safety is...interesting .

Hmmm- you found it a bit sharper than the Weaver?
I figured the Diamondback would be, but am surprised at the Crossfire. Any way, nice write- up, Steve! |
