G'day all,

First post here and a great place I am sure to get some answers to this question. I usually shoot long range target rifle comp ( 900 yards ) using tangent sights but am now wanting to spend more time with scoped 22LR. I've just put money down on a CZ 452 American Special - the Aussie versions with the beech furniture - and I'm wanting a nice scope for paper punching that can also do double duty for hunting.

Many of the gents that currently shoot 22LR at my range have the Leupold VX-II glass on their rifles, it has also been recommended to me that the 6-18x40 would be a good fit for my intended purposes. I tried a VX-II last weekend in a comp and liked it a lot, however I'm not sure they have the reticle in the VX-2 I would prefer. My eye has been taken with the new VX-r 3-9x40 or 50 because they have the Firedot Duplex among other features that I prefer. I like having a duplex and dot but am wondering if 9X is going to be enough scope for competitive precision target shooting at 100 yards.

Many of the blokes are shooting with their scopes cranked right up there ... some to 24x at 100 yards. I like being able to see the target close and tight, seeing the movement/wobble helps for decisive release time - at least for me - and a dot reticle is better focal point for my brain than two thin intersecting lines on a dark target background. I could possibly try and get the VX-r in the 4-12x but the price jumps sharply for not much more magnification vs the VX-2 is already up there at 18x if I need it ... downside, reticle.

So, will the VX-r 9x be enough magnification to get me tight on the bull at 100 yards or should I really be stepping up to the VX-r 12x ... or should I just go with the VX-2 6-18x and be done with it?

Cheers!

Welcome to Optics Talk.

I have both the 3-9x40 VX-R and 2 452 Trainer CZ's. One in .22 LR and the other in .17 HMR. Fine rifles. I have the VX-R on a Rem .223 though.

The short answer is no, I can't "get tight on the bull" as you say at 9x with the VX-R. Your eye sight may be better than mine, but for paper punching your talking about, I'd get a high magnification scope.

For double duty, I would suggest you get a scope with a lower magnification, (like around 3x) for hunting.

Not sure how much you have to spend, but a scope like this, may be ideal.

Cheaptrick,

Thanks for the suggestion but the Bushnell is more money than I can get the VX-2 for in my neck of the woods so I'd be better sticking with that, and it has quite a few users at my local so answers would be easily got if I have anything I needed to know at short notice. I had suspected that the 3-9 would not be enough glass for what I want in target shooting ... shame!

I know that they do a target dot for the VX-2 but the cross hairs look a bit too thin ... I would love to have a duplex dot on the VX-2 but I will have to compromise unless the Leupold custom shop might do one for me. I'll end up getting a VX-R at some point however - that will be my hunting scope I think.

Tiki.

Right.
I suggested the Bushy more for it's magnification range, than anything. The 6-18x you mentioned would be more than fine for target shooting, but a little high on the low end, 6x for hunting, as far as I'm concerned.
As I said, I'd rather stay around 3x or so for my hunting stuff.

Nikon Buckmaster in 4.5-14x might suffice you as well.

I agree for hunting 9x is out there - but with the VX-R 3-9x it is variable so I can have the 3x and the 9x is there if I want to reach out - I love the VX-R - great scope, just wish they had a bit more power than the 12x. Perhaps in future Leupold might add some more power to this series.

I've never had issues with a 3-9 at 100yds for getting really good tight groups.  This won't be your primary disipline and seems more like a fun factor than real competition for you.  The VX-R will be much better glass than the VX-2 and I think you'd be happier with it if you do ever plan to hunt at all.  That said they make a VX-R Patrol in 3-9 through Leupolds tactical division (not sure if you can get it over in the land down under),  I used that scope and loved it.  Never had issues with it and kinda now wish I would have kept it.

SVT,

I was hoping someone would toss a spanner into my bee-line for compromise ... thanks for the enabling! I would love to be able to use the VX-R for comp at 22LR - I am pretty competitive, so while it isn't my primary discipline, I actually plan to compete and I want to do well. I am using the 22LR as training for hunting, not just punching paper, since we shoot snap, forced application and shoot from prone, sitting and off hand at 90,60, 30 yards respectively. So it isn't just plinking for me, I like to put in the best performance I can.

I was trying to find an image online that showed the view of a target at 90-100 yards on 9x magnification ... wouldn't matter what scope it is, I just want to get an idea of how tight on the target 9x will be. If I think it looks close enough for me to be able to see what I need, I'll stick with the VX-R I think. I have also read some posts where people feel the VX-R glass is easily up there with the VX-3 glass ... so the glass of the VX-R is said to be better than the VX-2.

Hmmmmm ...

The VXR glass is up there with the VX3 if not the same.  I've head great groups with a 3-9 at 100 like I said before, I did this 10 shot group with a cheap simmons 3-9 on a CZ452 trainer and Lapua center x ammo and wasn't really trying, this is at 100yds -

I think you'll be better off all around with having something with lower power than 6 and a 3-9 will do more than most give it credit for.  I shot a .3?? group at 100yds with the above blaser and Leupold patrol with little effort as well.  If you think about it at 9X you are viewing a target at 100yds as if it was 9 times closer.  So so it would something around like looking at an object with your naked eye at 11-12 yards.  That help any?

Something to check on if you are going to be shooting at 30yds I am thinking that with the VXR it will be fuzzy at that distance at anything but the lowest magnifications. Since the VXR's that I am familiar with are centerfire scopes with parallax set at 100yds. I would think you would want something with an adjustable parallax that goes down to at a minimum of 30yds. I use a Leupold 3-9x33 EFR on my 22LR and have no problems getting tight groups at 100yds.

And I agree with SVT 9x at 100yds is similar to looking at a target at 11yds without any magnification.

Think I zigged, when you zagged here, but the 3-9x power range is my favorite hunting scope.
For tight shooting of paper, as you described, at 100 yards and further, I just need a little more power.....

This image I found purports to be 9x at 100 yards ... not sure if that is right or not, but if true, then this is certainly not enough power for what I want to do with target shooting. Does this look right to you guys?

I'd say that's pretty close, my friend.

Nice LaRue mount too.

Sparky,

You make a great point ... the AO on the VX-2 is pretty vital for the varied distance shooting we are doing - 90-60-30 etc ... so this is very likely why the blokes I shoot with favour the VX-2's for their rifles. I'll probably stick the with safe bet on the VX-2 and pick up a VX-R later on ... the magnification of 9X on a 100 yard target is not deep enough for precision stuff I need it for. Thanks for helping me sort it out gents!

Your image of 9x at 100yds is not even close to what I see with my Leupold 3-9x33 EFR. Mine is much larger, but I use Champion Visishot targets. I do not know what size target is in the photo though.

Rather than guess about what magnification you need. I would go to the range and ask to look through some different scopes and see what looks good to you. I have yet to meet a fellow shooter who would not be happy to let you look through his scope to help you out. Or go to your dealer with a friend and have him hold a target at 100yds for you to look at.

Also I do not know what scopes you have available to you, but another option if you want more magnification is the Leupold VX3 6.5-20x40 EFR. For me though the FOV is too small. Some other scopes that I would look at are from Sightron, Bushnell and Weaver.

Sparky,

I have shared three different rifles on my recent shoots for comps, where fellow members have been good enough to let me use their rifles for the same shoot. I have tried several scopes, the most recent was the VX-2 - however, different people ( older people ) have their scopes set up at a magnification that suits them. As a result I was not able to experiment with the higher magnification - and didn't want to play with their set ups too much.

The image I posted is not mine ... I found it as a random image, the owner said they thought it was 9x, but even they were not sure. I will definitely be attending the range and asking to see a 90 yard target set on 9X on someones scope, in order to get a better idea of what I am dealing with. As for scopes available  ... everything you get in the U.S we get here in OZ.

I was checking out Weaver and I might give them another look also ...

I'm going to go to the range here in a day or two and I will try to get some pics of scopes at 9x and at 100 yards.
SS 3-9x, Nikon Monarch 3-9x, and the VX-R 3-9x.

Well I went to the range today and had a look down the pipe using 9x up to 20x on a 60 yard target and it is pretty clear to me that a 6-18x Leupold is what I will want for 100 yard target rifle. The 9x looked nice but not enough to distinguish holes in the black at even 60 yards, let along 100! Decision made ...
