I like ACOG and Accupoints for that application.

Max distance depends on the model of scope The 5-20x50 Accupoint on a varmit caliber should take you to 600 yds possibly more depends on the shooter the ammo the rifle the wind the ---- well you get the idea.  As for the ACOG many models have hold over marks and with practice you should be deadly a long way off.  Most of the shots I take are set up to be in the 100 to 200 yd distance but so long as you know the balistics you can work well past that especially on scopes where you can dial in correction.  I am really quite pleased with the 1-4 accupoint on this bolt gun for a coyote rifle.

ACOGs don't make a great varmint scopes IMO, they will work, but definitely not the best option.  I had a 3x for a while, shot a bunch of rabbits and a couple yotes with it.

I have several scopes on ARs that have a 4x top end and I use them for small game all the time.  100 to 200 yards they work pretty well, beyond that I always wish I had a little more.

But a lot of it will depend upon the size of the game and the distance you want to shoot.  Shoot p-dogs at 300 and 400 yards with a 4x ACOG would probably be pretty challenging.  But 100 to 200 yards definitely doable.

Iv'e had a 3.5 ACOG thought it was a great scope but I also needed a little more mag.I wound up getting an IOR 1.5-8x26[new model with the illum on the side]It has a similar ret. to the ACOG,Schott glass & a 35 mm tube that comes with IOR rings. All I can tell you is that it's an excellent product.SWFA sells it for about the same price as the ACOG !

I guess when I'm thinking varmits I think coyotes and coon size animals if it was prairie dogs more scope would definately be a plus.

They would be about yote and coon size targets mabey a praire dog now and then. I will be hunting in wide open river bottems so max shots would be around 600 to 650yards

The idea of striking a football size target at varying distances out to 650 yds puts us into an entirely different category of optic.  The Trijicon Accupoint 5-20x50 has only 50 moa of internal adjustment so a plus 20 moa base or less would be desirable.  I would also take a hard look at the SS 5-20x50

The alternative is multiple optics in quick release mounts like shown here. That way you could use something like a Super Sniper fixed 16x42 for long range and run an ACOG the rest of the time.

This scope would not have the same high magnification but would also be quite capable of effective hits at 650 yds.   Really hard to beat this one for the price.  I have one of these on my bench right now waiting for the scope base to come in. Thunbs Up

I wouldn't want the swfa's with ffp for small(p-dog size) game. Those things get pretty small at 4-500 yds, don't want a reticle blocking your target.

Forgot to mention you should use a 20*moa rail as the Minox is only a total 40 moa elevation. The 4-20x50 Z5 has a total of 80 MOA elevation, might be a better scope.
