My wife and I decided to hit the rifle range yesterday morning. The day was nice and we were both shooting o.k. (not great but not bad either). One gentleman (I recognized from previous visits) came up to look at / praise my 1885 Low Wall that I was then shooting. He wanted to know how come the #3 did not have a barrel band. He was flabbergasted to find out it was actually a Winchester 1885. LOL, he was a bit embarrased because he prides himself as an "expert" on SS rifles. We both chuckled at that. He was cool though.

Then it happened. The wanna be showed up with rambo boots, fatigues and a Red Jacket Firearms T-shirt.   Hippie     He set up about 3 stations to my left with his basic AR.   Semi Auto     I thought all was going to be ok until I heard him touting his great new scope (he actually said he bought TWO because of the great deal). I just had to check it out so I ambled down for a look see. To hear him, this was the greatest scope he had ever seen. OMG, it's a NC Star! I about dropped a load      Puker     when he opined how it would match was I had on my Ruger 1S .300 H&H that I was now firing. When I said "likely not, I'm shooting a S&B" ...he said he had never heard of "Smit who". I shook my head, laughed and went back to my table. How cool was that? LOL. Big Grin

Thanks for sharing, Ric.

Kinda scary that gun sales are through the roof, but the people buying them have NO CLUE!

Edit to add:
I wouldn't buy a thing from the jerk that owns Red Jacket either.....

Seen a guy at the range this morning, seemed like a nice enough guy. He was trying to get his brand new DPMS LR308 on paper, so I set up my spotting scope to call for him. Then he has a misfire, and cant get the bolt open, so I lend a hand there too. While I am helping clear the rifle, I check out his scope, it's a Vortex Diamondback 2-7. It was mounted in a Burris PEPR mount...put on the rifle backwards...Never did get that rifle zero'd.Loco
If it is tourist season, why can't we shoot them?

I know exactly what you all mean my uncle (who makes a ton of money I may add) just bought his first AR. He put a quad rail with every cheap POS accessory you can think of. Then topped it off with a AIM 10-40x50. He then shows up to our annual shooting competition among family and friends bragging about his sweet new set up and how he is gonna kick all our butts with his bulk wolf ammo. Then come to find out he has never fired the rifle and it needs to be sited inLoco So after I site his rifle in for him because he cant get it on paper. He decides to loosen the rings to twist the scope because he thinks the cross hairs are not level. Then expects me to site HIS gun in for him again. People amaze me. You would think they would research a little before buying this junk. Among all the gun owners ther are only a Small percentage that can actually use their firearms to their full potential.  My AR is bare bones but buddy I bet I could have 2 clips sent before half these guys get ther gadgets turned on!!!!!!

Then another guy who claims to be a gun dealer sporting a brand new Kimber with laser grip cant hit a darn thing with or without the laser. And of couse waves his chambered gun around like crazy. (which only happend once before being addressed) Who also brings a high dollar over under trap gun and cant hit crap with that either. The $300 rem 870's won every time Smile I love it. My good friend somed it up best. Right after this gentleman missed his opteenth clay bird he says "Well that just goes to show you money cant buy you everything"

A few years ago I watched a lady shooting a very nice Smith and Wesson .38 fire THREE shots, left her finger on the trigger, LOOK DOWN THE BARREL, then proceed to fire the remaining rounds down range at the place I go. Loco
I told her her life flashed before my eyes!!

She denied she did that when I told her boyfriend/husband when he asked what was going on. (Shrug)

Well, I bet he's at least familiar with the labels on all the blister pack scopes at Walmart/K-Mart, Joe's Tire and Gun Shop, etc.

Hey... NcStar has some wonderful "features".  Mine has always been a source of great joy... (well, OK, it's lots of laughs...)  That scope will do things I never thought an optic could do.  It's a pretty good spotter, though... as long as you don't have to focus it or anything...

I've been thinking of adding it to my "scopes I've shot with (with, not on) .458 Lott" pile, but just can't bring myself to do it.   Maybe if BigDaddy will ever let me have my .50 back I'll try that...

I have had my share of inexpensive sights.

Hawk Reddot30. Just say that it was a toy for my teenage son.
It is OK if you have it on 22 rifle to aim at varmints within 50 yards or so.
My son sure had some exciting moments with it.

Watched a guy shoot his ramrod out of his Knight ML at the range one day.  I was opening my mouth to tell him "Hey, your ramrod is still in the barrel" when it went boom and bye bye.  We found it about 35 yards out bent and unusable.

Once you shoot it with the 50, then fill the scope with tannerite and repeat.  Just take a video for me to see.

My bro inlaw built an AR recently.  He had never even shot one til a few weeks before he bought all his parts.  He has shot about 100 rounds out of it now and thinks he is an expert rifleman, cracks me up.  He thinks he is an AR gun smith now as well.

He bought all these very nice parts for it.  Forged upper and lower, Lilja barrel, Young Mfg chrome bolt carrier, Adams Arms pistol kit, Samson mfg quad rail, nice trigger, etc.  He built a really nice rifle.

Then he buys a NcStar and puts on it.  I was just like nooooooo.

Then the last time we were visiting he brings it out to show me and he bought a flare launcher that looks like a grenade launcher.  Loco  I am very interested to see what is on it next.  Bucky

I actually bought the NcStar because it was CHEAP and I want to test some things out.  It worked really well for a while.  Then... "Mad Eye Moody" effect started.  Play with it long enough, and it can be adjusted, and if left alone, works fine.  Changing powers is painful because it must be focused every time magnification is changed... takes a while.

I have an NcStar "red dot" (4 different reticles) I was going to review as part of a review of low cost red dots... HOWEVER, I've never been able to get a zero with it.  Admittedly, I've not spent a lot of time with it, but there are some real challenges to this particular scope.  I put it on my S&W 22a and in a full box of ammo never could get "on paper" with an 18"x18" target at 25 yards.  I gave up and have not done anything with it since.

I'm thinking that a lot of those guns will be up for sale for cheap in a couple of years.
Matter of fact, I'm saving up for it.
