I'm just at the early "thinking about it" stage but I'm thinking I might pick up a Ruger 10/22TD later in the year (if I can find one locally) and had initially thought about pairing it with a Weaver RV7 for it's ruggedness, small size, and fast on target dual-x reticle. The Sightron S1 Rimfire's fine reticle just doesn't float my boat for a survival rifle and rabbit/squirrel assassin and I don't want to deal with AO in this one so an RV9 is not an option. Normally a ProStaff wouldn't be on my radar but Nikon is claiming 98% light transmission for their 3-9x40 Rimfire ProStaff. I wish it was smaller (3-9x32) but the BDC sounds intriguing for emergency rabbit hunting. The only complaint that I've read so far was for the cheap plastic covers, has anyone here laid hands on one?
Thoughts on the glass and ruggedness compared to Weaver's RV7? Is it physically too large for a takedown carbine? I can't find the weight listed anywhere. I'm leaning RV7 but the Nikon is tempting with the current rebate.

I've decided to pass on the ProStaff based on a user review over on CalGuns. The reviewer generally liked it but noted that it was out of focus below 25yds which to me unacceptable for a rimfire scope. I just checked my old $50 Bushnell 3-9x32 rimfire and it's in focus at 10 yards.

I have no experience with the Prostaff. But I was just looking at the Nikon site.
They have a 3-9X40 AO EFR that they say will focus down to 10 yards. And they have a $50 rebate. Thinking about the 4X, myself. |

Thanks. I have a Weaver RV9 w/AO filling that role in my collection. I'm looking at scopes without AO for hunting. Having to stop to adjust AO before taking a shot at something close up just won't work for what I'm trying to do. I already have an old (but NIB) Bushnell 3-9x32 Rimfire and I may just use that if I go though with buying a take down rifle. Those old and now discontinued Bushnell Rimfires were surprisingly good considering how cheap they were. Not on the level of a Weaver, but decent.

Their 98% light transmission claim is bogus I believe, they may be refering to each seperate lense transmitting 98%, so I 'm not sure how many lens there are in total, but if it's 3, then that's 98% of 98% of 98% = 94.1%.
I own three Nikon Prostaff scopes. my 2-7x32 will focus on something around 5m away, so perhaps something to consider vs a 3-9x? I've just purchased a few Vortex diamondback scopes. They claim a minimum of 91% light transmission and are NOTICEABLY brighter than any of my Nikons. So I call BS. I've also heard bad things about the Sightron S1's, as I was looking at trying them out I did a bit of research. So I would keep looking. I might suggest a 2-7x32 Diamondback or Burris FFII or FF e1. Good scopes. |

Has anyone used the Nikon scope in the OP? With the current rebate, I'm tempted to try one on my 15-22.

Also look at the Burris rimfire 3-9x40. I have one on a .22 and it has been great!
