Tested 2 in the blaser the same time I was shooting the 223. First up is 200gr SMKs They don't stabilze enough from the looks of it. I loaded up 20, Did two 5 shot targets that none were touching on and just fired the last 10 into this group. Then had some hornady 168gr HPBT's that i had loaded up the same way. The first 5 shot group was one ragged hole, the second was on it way to be the same til some goofball that was pulling the trigger pulled one. Anyway here is a ten shot group just like the one above.
Both of these are shot at 200yds with the blaser and the SS 3-9x42. Center circles are 1"

New lapua cases, FLS, CCI LR mag primers, Varget (not sure of exact load) Hornady 168gr HPBTs. Loaded Mag length.
The mag on the thing really prevents setting bullets out there. I have some 175gr Amaxs but didn't have any loaded for this test.

Why the "mag" primers? I run the CCI BR2's.

Thats a great question Mark'o. Heck I have some MAG rounds I don't load with mag primers. They just shoot better that way.

I run BR2's as well, but maybe your load works better with mags.
44 - 46 of Varget seems to be the sweet spot (I stay closer to 44, some rifles like 45+.) Keep playing around with it, eventually the rifle will find something it really really likes.

I am going to test some more this weekend, I have another scope now to use on this gun. The 3-9 is hard to test loads with at 200. Thinking with a touch more mag and better conditions I should find something that works better, i hope.
Anyone have any 150-160gr SMKs or equivalent they would part with 10 or so rounds?

I may have some Lapua 155gr Scenars laying around. I'm sure I have some 155gr SMK's I could let you have. Advise. Changing primers from magnum to a lesser "probably" won't matter, but I thought it was odd you chose those.

Do a LR primer stay away from the mag primers. There is no need. I would do 5 loads at 44.5 and work in .5 up to 46.5. I would load all at mag length.

I will not be using mag primmers for future testing, again I normally use regular LR primers but think I just had the mags out because of loading some 300 win mags prior to.

Interesting
Both my rem 1-12 twist and sav 1-10 twist like
168 amax 45.5 varget, hornady brass,BR2 primers,COL 2.85 This is a slightly compressed load. Varget likes to be compressed in my experience consistent 3/4 inch at 100. I almost always come home with a couple 1/2 groups tho. |
