What advantages are there to a 80mm scope vs a 65mm other than more magnification and better light transmission?

Bigger!
And bigger is always better! Main advantage is a brighter site picture at high magnification. And, FYI, there is a significant increase in brightness comparing equivalent scopes, one in 65mm and one in 80mm. Unless you are really short on space, get the 80, it will be appreciably brighter.

The larger objective optic provides slightly better resolution, in theory. This assumes a comparison made between optics of equivalent quality to begin with.

I owned both of these spotters (no not these exact silver ones but the same model and type both straight eyepieces. http://www.samplelist.com/Zeiss-65mm-Diascope-FL-DEMO-A-P189.aspx and http://www.samplelist.com/Zeiss-85mm-Diascope-T-FL-DEMO-A-P194.aspx I would have to say they were night and day differences. The 85 was 25-50% brighter in any light from what my eyes could tell. (possibly more!!! the 25% is if by spec someone works it out to only be say 35% brighter as a mathematical possibility but I would have to say 50% seems more likely for my eyes) Edited by 338LAPUASLAP - May/24/2011 at 19:46 |

Is it going to be used on a range or in the field for hunting?

Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

I prefer a quality 80mm spotting scope myself so I can use the higher powers at longer ranges, but in the field a 60mm would do in most cases and be lighter and more compact.
