The issues with the Aero mounts have put their mounts on my Do Not Buy list. Not worth it. I won't buy a mount hoping to hit the lottery or knowing I need to have it modified to function properly.

I know AP makes some great stuff, it's invested or allied with other solid companies (Ballistic Advantage, VG6 Precision), but that doesn't mean I will entertain purchasing third rate stuff.

I have other stuff from them and I have no complaints about it.  It is only the mounts.

Keep in mind that vertically split rings that incorporate some flex generally are not great for scopes (apparently there are some fairly well documented issues with ADM mounts and Warne rings) when used on scopes that need a lot of turret twisting.  The Aero Precision mounts, in my experience, have that exact issue.

Koskin, what did you end up putting on your Grendel, the GG&Z FLT?

I ended up using the Grendel for scope testing, so it has had a bunch of scopes and mounts on it.  The sort of a "standard" set-up for the Grendel is SWFA SS 3-9x42 in a Aeroprecision mount that I hacked a little to make it work.

GG&G mount, at the moment has a rather excellent Hawke Frontier 1-6x24 scope in it that I am testing on a 5.56 AR.

Ilya, can you please tell us about the "TLC" the Aero Precision AR-15 mounts require to work right? I have several due to buying them before I read your reviews, so I'm interested in knowing how to avoid trouble while still making use of them...

There aren't really any tricks, just experimentation.  I found a couple of scopes that work OK with these mounts when the rings are at somewhat specific parts of the tube and use them that way.  It took some trial and error.
