    Posted: December/29/2010 at 10:36

I received a Nikon Monarch 800 for Christmas while my brother received a bushnell legend 1200.

I found the bushnell to be optically more clear and less critical on eye relief.  The yardage was not as bold and sometimes hard to read on his.

My main  issue is that both binoculars gave different readings.  I did not measure to see which one was correct because I did not make the time.  At one object my Nikon gave a reading of 112 yards while his Bushnell read 90 yards.  On shorter targets his tended to read a shorter distance than mine.

Are either of these known as giving the wrong yardage?

Thanks

Both have good "guaranteed" accuracy.  You need to ensure that there are no outside reflectors interfering with one or the other or both LRF's.  You also MUST measure accurately to understand which one may be giving a false reading.
There are a number of factors that can impact LRF readings.  Make sure you are comparing the widely overused "apples to apples"...

Both companies offer very good warranties, if there is a problem with one or the other of the LRF's.

Having used both, owned several models of each type, I would say the "edge" goes to Bushnell in a head to head battle, but it is so close it is almost not an issue.  Bushnell has, generally, a little wider FOV and the ARC feature is outstanding.  Glass is similar.

I chose Nikon's Laser IRT scope over Bushnell's and Burris' because I liked some of the available operational features better... overall they were pretty much the same.  The Laser IRT was a little "cleaner" to my eye than the other two, but I never had them "side by side" only at different times, though within hours in one case... pretty close to side by side.  I've been very pleased with the Nikon Laser IRT and the Bushnell 1500 I currently have.  I've measured both and they maintain a +/- 1 yard accuracy out to advertised ranges in "reasonable" conditions.
Opinion,untempered by fact,is ignorance.

That does seem odd. I had a Nikon 440 and it was off by 1 yard @ 100 yards (steel tape verified distance). I wouldn't expect any decent LRF to be off by much out to 300-400 yards or so. Maybe you'll get a chance to verify both of them at an exact distance. Let us know what comes of that.
Reaction time is a factor...

I agree, something is up with one or the other.  I'd want to make sure and verify which one is off as indicated above.

Make sure the batteries are good and correct in both units. The clock is off in one of them.

Make sure they are both reading in "yards" .  My friend and I compared LRF and they gave different readings....his was set to "meters"

I know for a fact that both were in yards.  I guess we could recheck the the battery installation but bother were new and appeared fine.   I will check mine to make sure mine is working before I get him involved with his.  I believe it the bushnell that was off but I will check to be sure.  I will check as soon as I can and report my findings.
