I"m in the market for a scope to go on a Savage 30-06 synthetic stock bolt gun. Of course, I'm in the market for that two !! From what I've read about a 30-06 recoil with a lighter stock, it is substantial. Not to worry because I have M95 Steyr's and Carcano carbines that kick like mules. However, none of these have scopes.
Should I be looking for longer than average eye relief ? From what I've seen on the scopes I've looked at 3.5 to 4.5 seems to be "average". I don't want it coming back & breaking my $2.99 shooting glasses. This is only for range shooting out to 200 yards. No hunting.

I love a 30-06 Ive been shooting them since I was 5 or 6. The kick is just right not too strong like a steel butt plate straight stock 30-30 and not too light like a .223 you will love it.
Now the question is how much do you want to spend and what features do you want on the scope. I truly prefer Leupold Scopes mainly the VX-III and Mark 4 scopes. There are Leu PR Mark 4 3-9x40 scopes with target knobs for as little as $399. Thats a bargain. Right now there is a fixed 16 power Leupold Mark 4 on SWFA Sample list that is used:
Thats a bargain for a target scope of that quality. They also have two used 12X scopes there
These will work perfectly for target shooting - high power so you can see where you hit without walking to the target or carrying a spotting scope. Also there are several companies that sell rifle rests that reduce recoil like Cabellas:
