If you can add a little more, the 3-9x40 Zeiss Conquest for $399 is an excellent choice.

Hunting or target?  For hunting I would wait for the fixed 6x Super Sniper to be released this summer.  For target any of the Super Sniper scopes would work for you but the 16 and 20 will look dark in low light where the 10 would be useable later in the day and the 6 will be maximum brightness.  Other than that I would say watch the Bushnell 4200 3-9x40 it goes on sale occasionally  http://swfa.com/Bushnell-3-9x40-Elite-4200-Rifle-Scope-P6910.aspx  right now its on sale for $254.95 that is a really good price for it.
If you go that route I would zero the crosshair at 300 for the center and check where the vertical above and below go thin to thick and use those points at the maximum magnification only as hold over and hold under points and see what distances they correspond to.  Make notes on the range.  Likely the point above will be about 200 and the one below will be about 400 yds.   A traditional duplex can be used in this manner similar to how a balistic reticle would be used.  Just remember it only works at the highest power.
If you can pry a tad more money out of your wallet you would be a lot happier with this scope

I'll assume this is a paper puncher since you said 500 yards, not out to 500 yards.

Here's my .02

If you prefer side focus and variable magnification. "If it's a competition gun a lot of places limit you to 6x on the high side"

Both scopes are good and are at the upper limit of your price range.

The 4200 Imaginary friend linked is a really nice scope and a great deal at $255 if can live with 9x on the high side. It's going to be a lot clearer at 9x than other scopes in that price range with higher top end magnification. A lot of guys here can shoot good groups at 9x @ 500 yards. I'm not one of them.

If God didn't want me to play with it, he'd of made my arms shorter.

Hard to beat the older SS's and Bushy 3200 10x in that price range.
