I have never used a red dot and thought I would give it a try since my eyes are getting older. What would be a good, lower cost red dot for deer and hog hunting and target shooting? What size dot is good for what? Is there a site that explains all this about red dots? |

Aimpoint red dot scopes will hold point of impact regardless where your head is positioned behind the scope. Cheap red dot scopes only work if you head is in the exact same place every time.
3MOA or 4MOA is typical and at 100 yds that means it covers 3 in or 4 in .
This is as cheap as you can go without running into problems:

As stated on a different thread, I have been using a Pro Point 2 on a 357 Mag and it has held up quite well. I have not moved it to either of my 44mags ( T/C, which has a Leoupold 2X on it, and a Ruger SBH, currently open-sighted,) so I can not say from personal experience how it will hold up to a 44 Mag. However, before I tried a Pro Point I read a number of reviews on a different site that all claimed that their Pro Points held up year after year on their 44Mags. (In addition, when shooting a 500 S&W at a demonstration when they first came out, I recall the S&W rep commenting on how sturdy the old Pro Points were in his opinion.)
