    Posted: July/24/2005 at 12:49
I want to replace the scope for my squirrel gun, a 77/22.  I'm replacing a long discontinued Tasco 2-7x AO airgun scope with a fine reticle I bought @20 yr.s ago for squirrel hunting.  It's worked fine out to @35 yards, which is enough for squirrels in the woods.  But lately it's fogged in wet weather.  I want variable power because it's easier to locate squirrels at low power and easier for my 56 year old eyes to target their heads at 7 plus power.  I'd like more power at the high end so I can be more comfortable with longer shots at squirrels and when on the rifle range to 50 yards.  I want AO because squirrel heads are very small and sometimes I get a shot inside 15 yrd.s.  I need a scope that can deal with shadows near dawn and dusk.  I've got Leupy VXIII's, Bush. 4200's, on my centerfire rifles and IOR binocs that I like a lot.  The raincoating on the Bushnell 3200 seems a good idea on a scope that will be pointed up in the rain a lot but are the optics as good as the 4200's for my purposes.  Quality optics generally seem worth the price at my age.   My questions:
What reticle do you recommend?
What power range would you recommend?
What would be my best scope options?

The Bushnell 4200 sounds perfect for your application. It has a wide power range of 4-16x to cover every situation you can throw at it. The adjustable objective will focus from 10 yards to infinity. The optics will be better than the 3200's. It has a 95% light transmission rating allowing you to get those low light shots. Also has the famous rain guard coating.

Brady, Thanks for the input.  The Leupy you recommend is one of the scopes I've short-listed, but I'm wondering if the 4x as the lower mag will be low enough.  I hunted with a fixed  4x scope for years and found the 2x-7x I replaced it with made it easier to locate a cutting squirrel quickly.  What do you think?

Another question.  Some folks are telling me AO is overkill even for those little squirrel heads.  If I bought a fixed paralax scope and had it adjusted for say 35 yrds. vs. the 50 or 60 yards most seem to be adjusted for, do you think I'd be happy with the results on squirilles 20-40 yrd.s and the range at 50 yrd.s?  I can't imagine shooting at a squirrel in the eastern woods beyond 50 yrds.s and I've got a great .223 or other varmints from 50 to aboaut 350 yards.

Most fixed PX scopes are set at 100yrds save the odd "black powder" that is at 50. I've seen one or two makes that are directing sales at airguns that now offer a 35yrd PX option.

At LARGER exit pupil values the risk of head position not being 100% aligned is higher and this CAN cause POI shift due to PX non alignment.

Set a Bushnell3200 10*40 to 30metres the other day for a friend - and it's CLEAR from 20 to 45m and OK at 50. Set a 4x at 35 and you'll be fine.

I didn't recommended the Leupold. The Bushnell 4200 is what I recommended at first. If you feel more comfortable with the lower low end power the Leupold EFR would be nice. It's a 3-9X40. It also has the AO that adjust down to 10 yards. I like the AO's myself. Allows you to fine tune your cross hairs for a real crisp view. It's up to your budget and opinion to consider if it's over kill. You wouldn't have a problem with a scope that a had a parallax setting of 35.
