hey guys, i still havent decided on a spotter yet. they are all so expensive but im scared if i go the cheap way out i will regret it. my budget is now 4-500$ and ill be using it for determining the size of whitetail at 7-800 yds. and zeroing rifles at 300. ive noticed that some of the cheaper scopes are larger. if carrying a large scope around is not an issue for you , can you get a better scope for cheaper? thanks!

In my experience, not really.
By "size of a whitetail at 7-800", are you referring to rack or body size? A decent spotter should show you bullet holes at 300 yards (assuming a .30-cal or bigger), unless mirage is a problem - then it'll be a problem regardless. |

As a general rule, and assuming you are comparing optics of similar quality, optics with larger objectives will always be "better" (optically) than those with smaller objectives. They will be brighter, offer better contrast, have a greater capacity for resolving detail, etc. The down side is that they are always bigger and heavier, making them more difficult to always carry around. The trick is finding the scope (or combination of scopes) that best serves your individual needs both in terms of physical size and optical performance. |

What if the hokey pokey really is what it's all about?

i did mean the rack size and when i was referring to size of the scope i meant more length than anything. some of these scopes look more like telescopes for looking at the stars and they seem alot cheaper but they are huge.
