Forgive me for I do not have much understanding of optics. I have a Remington 700 .22-250 and was wanting a scope that i can stretch out to 800 if it is possible for this gun but still be able to shoot stuff at 200. I am shooting hand loads that push me just over 3850 fps. I want something to (GTE) reach out and touch somethin. Let me know what you guys think willing to spend about $700-1000. Thanks ahead of time and I appreciate all comments. Sorry again if this seems unfeesable for a .22-250 round, but if its possible i wanna make it happen. I have already punched baseball size groups across the canyon at my Grandads the size of a baseball at 450. As soon as i get some time i will get some pics for you guys.

Obviously you need something with tactical knobs and a lot of internal adjustment. Have you plugged your load info into a balistic calculator http://www.jbmballistics.com.
Based on what you said I believe this to be the best optic for your needs:

The down side of trying to go extreme long range with a light fast bullet is that they loose most of their energy in the first few hundred yards and they get blown around by wind worse than a larger heavier bullet. You would be well advised to step up to a heavy bullet like an 80 gr SMK or heavier --- even though it cost you velocity it will retain energy better and be blown around less. One other scope worth considering is the 3-9x42 Super Sniper.

The futher you want to shoot, the better resolution scope you will need. It takes clarity not just magnification.

Good scopes listed so far. A lot of adjustment will be needed.
The 1/14" twist rate on the Remington will not stabilize the 80 gr bullet. I have two Remington .22-250's and they shoot best with the 55-60 gr class bullets. Even the 69 gr SMK's are pushing it with the slow twist.

You all are very right and tahqua thanks for the gr. class bullets. I think the main reason i am wanting a setup like this is to be able to shoot groundhogs and coyotes in the panhandle. I am also looking to shoot at coyotes off the bluffs and around the rivers here in Texas. So my next reply to all is first, a thank you for the information you have posted but, also if you were to go to a different setup such as another smaller calliber what bullet what would you go with and what setup would you use? I am opent to anything....AR's etc. Anything goes... Im talkin even stuff you dream of....

Allow me to clarify a little better. Is it possible to take a .22-250 round and hit an object the size of a washing machine down to say a basketball, accurately and repeadedly at 800-1000yrds.

You are really at a disadvantage with a 1/14 twist I have a hard time believing it is that slow of a twist. My AR's are running 1/7 and 1/8 and will definately compete at 600 yds with a 77 or 80 gr bullet. The 80 is too long for the magazines. If you want to get out to extended distances like 1000 you need to select a caliber with a high balistic coeffecient. http://www.sierrabullets.com/index.cfm?section=reloading&page=coefficients I would suggest you look at 6.5x284 and 300 Win Mag if you want to get to 1000. A .308 can get you there with a hot 190 gr SMK but as a bullet drops below the speed of sound it becomes less stable and less predictable. Can you hit something at 1000 with your 22-250 - yes with practice and the right bullet and you may need to re-barrel to a faster twist to be able to shoot the heavy bullets accurately.

My HBAR runs great with 69 gr and 1/7".
The Remington barrels weren't developed with the long range target/tactical crowd in mind, but the average varmint hunters shooting .223.

Ok all still very helpful.... As i am new to this long distance shooting i would like to know what is the best AR to go to (or all the very best AR's as an option) for shooting long distance and what is the price of a good solid 800 yrd setup going to cost. |

I would rebarrel my 700 if I were you, and get into handloading.
Put a 26 or 28 inch Pac-Nor or Krieger, (sorry Squeezer- he needs a long barrel for this application), 1-7 and load 80 MatchKings or Bergers in the same 22-250 chambering you have. You'll be able to run to a thousand yards with it and stay supersonic all the way, easily. the extra case capacity of the 22-250 will be a decided advantage over the .223 for what you wish to do, if you decide to stay with a .224 bore diameter cartridge.

I was faced with the same dilima. I'd suggest something on a 6mm caliber (they're less than a half mm apart from each other (ie 243 WIN, 6mm Remington just to mentiona couple). They have better BC's and higher velocity over the 22 cals and they can reach out there. You can just use your exisitng rig and change the barrel. I know someone who does this, he uses a
220 Swift, 6mm Remington, 260 Remington and 308 Winchester, all with the same action and bolt.
If your barrel is a 1-14 twist, it will run out of steam since its optomized for light bullets (low BC's) only.

I have two 22-250's my favorite is a Rem 700 Sendero w/ a Bushnell Elite 4200 6x24x40. I PD hunt and have found that the 600 yard marker for my gun is about the max. I load a 52gr Sierra #1410 HPBT Match w/ IMR 4064. You will have to do some extra to get out to that mark, good luck let us know what you get..
